Default Transmission fluid question????

I have an '03, V-8 tundra w/ an auto tranny. According to the owners manual, it states to only use Toyota type IV fluid. Ok, now the question......according to the owners manual, the correct amount of fluid for a drain and refill is about 2 quarts. Is this correct??? That seems like a very small amount of fluid.

Any help is appreciated!!!

If you're just taking the plug out of the pan and draining the pan, have about 4 quarts ready. It usually takes a little less than four with mine. Make sure you use the new speced fluid. It is not Dextron anymore!!

If you just drop the pan and refill, it's around 4 quarts, if you flush your tranny it's significantly more due to the fluid that's in the torque converter and such.

Does the fact that Toyota specifies different transmission fluids for the older Tundras and newer Tundras mean the tranny is different? My 2000 Tundra calls for Dexron-III and my 2004 Sequoia call for the newer Type IV. I thought the engines/transmissions are the same.

Yes, there were minor changes to the transmission in 2003 and different ATF is required.

Question Is there a new ATF capacity for the 2003 and up? (Dry fill)

Yes my manual says:

"Automatic Transmission

Fluid capacity (drain and refill), L (qt., Imp. qt.):
Up to 2.0 ( 2.1, 1.8)

Fluid type:
Toyota Genuine ATF Type T-IV"

Does this mean the dry fill changed from the 2000-2002 models, if so what is the new amount of fluid in the whole system?

I am curious because I am planning on flushing my ATF fluid and want to make sure that I run the same amount that is in it right now, through it. To try to give a 100% flush.

A drain and fill takes 4 qts (service manual says 2.1). According to the service manaul a complete change over takes 13 qts (but I thing it is closer to 15)

Thanks nhparrot, I'll just buy 15 quarts of the type t-iv atf, and use all 15 of them.

If it is only 13 qt. then it shouldn't hurt flowing 15 qt. through it if I only put back what I take out.

Thanks again.

Default What about the 2004 capacity?

Is the 2004 Tundra 4.7l w/auto tranny have the same capacity (about 4 quarts)?
