Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Cyclical vibration in my 2003 Tundra", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm new here, so please bear with me. I have a 2003 4X4 Access Cab (silver sky) with the TRD off road package. For the past few months I've noticed a 'thrumming' sound that I can also feel through the pedals that starts at about 30MPH and continues through 45MPH. It seems to alter in frequency with vehicle speed but not RPM, and it disappears if you engage 4WD. It seems to stay away for a few minutes after you return to 2WD as well. It's been getting louder since the weather turned cold. Thus far I've had the tires rotated, left front wheel bearings replaced, wheel nuts torqued, and finally all tires and rims swapped with a Limited, all to no avail. I've read on one website about front differential problems, and one person replied that his problem had been fixed with replacement of the front diff and another suggested a synthetic front diff oil? I've also read comments about driveshafts, spider gears, and a few other possibilities. I'm returning to the dealer in 2 days, and if anyone has had similar problems, I would really appreciate any clues as to what the problem could be and how it was fixed. I love my Tundra, and this is ruining my experience. Thanks!

Similar situation.... it was the drive shaft out of balance. It cost me $35.00 to rebalance and well worth it. If it is still new, check into this... My .02

I have the same truck and had the same vibration and now mine is fixed, I had the front differential replaced on the passenger side with a redesigned one, do a search under this forum "disappointed with vibration on a 2003" and you will see.

Thank you, Boxer. Nice to know I'm not the only one. I'll make the tech aware and hopefully they'll do the same for my truck. Regards, Runnerjim.

OK...now I'm confused. I remember reading about this...but why would Toyota "redesign" the front differential on an 03 Tundra? I don't even remember a TSB on the 03 for that.

The front diff on the '03 has not been redesigned and no TSB has ever been issued on this issue. Although a new diff may have been installed, I do not think it is different then any other '03 diff.
Note - when a part or system has production changes during the model year, a TSB is released to notify the dealers.

Yes...that is good news. And one nice thing about this site, your dealer has maybe a hundred or 2 Tundras to cover service on and a far more limited base of Tundra owners then this site with 20,000 plus members.
So an occational tranny or differential should be expected given the numbers this site has.....but your dealer may well not have ever replaced one, for the reason given.
I just try to keep up on the TSB's so if I have a problem someday...I know where to look.
