Exclamation Drive Line / Ujoint

Started hearing a low resonace noise / vibration at 16,500 running 80mph. Finally took a day to take to dealer ( 2 hours-- live in remote Wyoming). On the way to dealer, a u-joint melted-- had to drive 85 miles at 50mph.

They replaced both ujoints on drive line. I got on highway for trip home and the same noise before the ujoint meltdown occurred was present. Went back, they heard it, felt it, put a new drive line in --problem solved.

I asked for info when they tear the drive line apart as to cause of his DISSAPOINTMENT at 16,000 miles. Their first check indicated all balance weights were still on drive line.

Anyone else with similar trouble??--FINDOG

Default Re: Drive Line / Ujoint

You didn't specify if you have a 4x4 or a 4x2. Which is it? Also, if it was a 4x4, which driveshaft was it? Front or rear? On the Tundras, the front driveshaft is made here in the US by DANA. The rear driveshaft appears to be made in Japan based on stampings on the U-joint caps. If it was the front driveshaft U-joint that failed, have you been using 4x4 quite a bit? If it was the rear driveshaft that had the damaged U-joint, how in the world could you continue along at 50 MPH?

Default Re: Drive Line / Ujoint

Arkie--- it was the rear drive line. The ujoint failure, per the mechanic, was the end caps comoing off and the needle bearings falling out. The drive line was never damaged and the mechanic confirmed that there were no external damage to the shaft ( i.e. hitting a rock). The failed ujoint was the one closest to the x-fer case, but both were replaced-- not solving inititial problem.

All good at this point, still waiting to here from dealer on their teardown of the shaft--- I suspect I will have to call for the results...
