Question Best Repair Manual?

Other than the Service/Repair area on this website what's the best repair manual to purchase? An expensive official Toyota Service Manual? a $15 Autozone/Chilton's? I am definately not a mechanic by any means.. so a manual that is suited to beginners (or rookies if you like) is what I'm after.

Thanks, Lain

I haven't see either manual, but in past experiences Haynes makes a more user friendly manual. The factory manuals are geared toward mechanics and not "rookies".

XenonSports (shardauto@mailnew.com) was selling the Toyota repair manuals (mechanical & electrical) on a CD for around $25. The CD had a Toyota copyrighted logo on it, and the contents seemed to be legit. However, the CD is somewhat difficult to navigate since it is just a bunch of PDF files distributed across several nested directories. Once you figure out the cryptic file and folder abbreviations (e.g., "at" = automatic transmission) then it is not too difficult finding what you need.

What this CD really needs is a browser front-end that can list the contents in HTML with links to chapters and sub-chapters. Unfortunately, I don't know of such a thing being available and will probably create that myself when I have time.

Default That Would Be Nice

That would be very nice of you. I have a CD like that for my Yamaha Grizzly 660 and it is easy to navigate. Let me know if you do this. I have been thinking about ordering one of the CD's for my 2001 Tundra.

Get a Haynes...they have a 2000-2002 manual out now. You can pick one up on ebay for about $12-$14.

I won't be doing that anytime soon (probably not until I really need to use the CD manual), but when I do, I will post a note on this forum. I am not an HTML wizard, so anything I do will not be elegant. I am simply thinking of a TOC with hyperlinks.
