Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Resonator for Smog in California", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have an 04 Tundra Double with 2 Cats and 1 Resonator. I cut the resonator off so my Flowmaster could sound louder. Will I still be able to pass Smog in California now that I cut the resonator off? How often are you supposed to get Smog tests in California.?

Every other year, beginning when the vehicle is 5 years old, however, whether the year is even or odd is determined by the VIN number, but if that would put the first year on the 6th year, then you'll get hit with a test to renew the 4th year. My '00 Echo actually came due for a test this year, even though it's first registration was May of 2000.
As to whether you'll pass smog or not, it depends on the tester. If you get randomly selected for a test-only station, they will be more likely to peg you than if you just go to the local mechanic, however, I have had test-only not even look under the car.
Technically, you've modified the exhaust system which is a failure.

The resonator has nothing do due with emissions. Its a straight through muffler for noise suppression. As long as the cats are in place, you can run anything you want behind it. You could run straight duals behind if you wanted.
I thought all CA vehicles came with 3 cats. The resonator on the non Ca models was replaced with a cat on a CA model. If you removed the extra cat the you may not pass. Look in that picture below, it us my truck. The first thing on the way back to the back is the extra cat that CA models come with. The next thing is a resonator that came on my TRD exahust. The last thing (the big one) is the muffler. Which one did you cut off? I always thought that the CA trucks had 3 cats, but that may have changed. The resonator came with the TRD exahust, not from the factory.
Toyota redesigned the converter system in '03'. More efficient converters off the manifolds did away with the 3rd cat downstream. Ca Tundras now have a resonator in place of that older 3rd cat. Anythin 'cat-back' , which is now behind the two main cats will be fine.

So that would mean 00-02 models have three semi-inefficient cats while 03-04 models have two efficient cats. In that case, if I did away with my third cat (and resonator), my truck has less of a chance of passing smog than a 03-04... correct?

RX, you wont pass the visual check if you remove your 3rd cat for sure. Its possible it would pass the tail pipe test with 2 cats. The 03 and ups have larger cats below the manifolds, making them more efficient than previous years. This is nice for those of us(myself included) that want to do 3" piping from the Y back legally.
