Transmission ATF Flush vs. Drain & Refill
My wife's RX300 recently turned 90,000 and it is time for a major service. The last time I checked the ATF I noticed that it was getting very dark and was anticipating a complete ATF flush, which would be consistent with the consensus here which seems to recommend a flush every 30,000 miles. I also reviewed the service records and noted that a flush had never been done, so I was certain that would be recommended by the dealership.
I was reviewing the Lexus dealership recommended service items (which, by the way, are more stringent and extensive than those required by the Lexus owner's manual) and noted that the pertinent item simply said "perform automatic transmission service." So, I called the dealership to find out what this really means, and the answer was "drain and refill.". I asked why they don't recommend a complete flush and replacement of the ATF and was told that this may cause problems in a high-mileage transmission since it loosens and moves debris around in the transmission, etc.
Since we don't have our vehicles serviced at the dealership anyway, I called our independent mechanic to find out what his recommendation was, and got much the same story -- i.e., this can dislodge metal particles that can get stuck in solenoids, etc. His practice is to inspect the ATF at frequent intervals and to drain and refill as necessary to keep the ATF healthy.
With so much discussion on this forum about flushing, I was surprised to hear this, but perhaps it makes sense. Just wondering what your thoughts are.
