need advice on engine timing belt and h20 water pump (at once)
I wanted to ask anybody advice on this i am getting my engine timing belt replaced next tue and i recall a past post about replacing the water pump belt's as well ..Well my dealership today advised me to spend $280.00 for the engine timing belt which didn't seem bad and that my ext warrenty would cover the water pump replacment too..My question is why does the water pump needing to be replaced when you change your engine timing belt ? I called my ext warrenty and was told my dectuctable would be $100.00 so the total cost is $280.00 plus my $100.00 dec which is around $380.00 dollars would you spend that or shall i go with $280.00 cost of the new engine belt and let it go?

The timing belt drives the water pump. The labor to get to the water pump is maybe 99% the same work. If the pump failed before the next belt is due, you'd have to pay again for the same removals. On some engines (I don't know about Tundras) if the water pump seizes, the belt is damaged, and an interference engine can be trashed. For the cost of the pump, maybe $120, some folks renew the pump as a matter of course.

dang, i shoulda just posted on the active thread. my serp tensioner seems to be just fine...proper tension, no noise; therefore i think no replacement, probably same with the timing tensioner.
i'm also thinking the same thing with the radiator and heater hoses, unless someone says different for a specific reason.
basically, if theyre doing fine, i dont see any reason to change them, unless theyre going to wear out by the 180k maintenance.
to me the water pump issue is more along the lines of the old "Pay Me Now or Pay Me Later". I you look at it like this it makes better sense to do it now because its cheaper than later.
