Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Clicking Noise While Backing Up", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have a stock 2002 4WD Sequoia, Limited with approximatley 28K miles. Recently, I noticed that everytime I'm backing up in reverse (2WD), I hear a metal clicking noise coming from the front drive train. The clicking noise sounds like the front axle is disengaging itself even though I'm in 2WD. Anyone experiencing this problem or is this normal. The Sequoia drives fine otherwise.

Supposedly, thats the ABS doing a self check, or resetting or somthing. Thats what the toyota Service manager said. I've heard many other tundra's doing the same thing. My '02 Tundra 2WD does it every time i back up. It gos "clickclick-ting!". Its embarassing sometimes in public. My brothers '01 camry does it too. I think its normal. I have also driven a 4WD tundra, and i was engaging and disengaging the 2/4WD, and it does sound very similar. You should be fine. You can get it checkd out by a tech if it bugs you.
If it only happens when you back up just after startup, it's the ABS, if it's happening after you've been driving a while, it's something else...ABS does it's self check shortly after startup after the vehicle start to move. After that it does not do any checks until the next startup cycle...

That it is the calipers sliding and stopping when you travel in the opposite direction i.e. reverse. My Tundra always does it.You hear a metal sound?Like the same if you tap on the dust sheild with a wrench?

Yes, it's a metal to metal sound, it sounds more like two pieces of metal clanking together, like hitting two boxend wrenches together. So it's my front brake calipers are making the noise and it's nothing to worry about?

The calipers do not slide in a tundra/sequoia. The brake pads slide.
The noise you hear is the brake pads contacting the rotors. It is a harmless noise and will not hurt anything.
Most toyotas make this noise.

Yep, I posted about this some time ago. The way you can tell if it's the pads making contact as opposed to something else is that it happens when you apply the brakes. Try putting it in reverse and as you idle back, applying the brakes lightly several times. You should hear it each time. If it's happening without applying the brakes, it's something else. Reading the first post and some of the others, it's hard to tell if they're stating that it happens whether using the brakes or not.

Is it true we have 4 piston calipers?
I was flipping through some old-a magazines the other day, dated back in 2000-2002, and one of the ads says they have 4-piston calipers. i was not aware of that if its true.
Yup, 4 piston calipers
Make sure the anti-rattle springs are in there.

Hey David37, the noise on your Seq sounds just like the one my 04, 4x4, Tundra makes. I also believe it's the front drive shaft. Don't know why it would make the noise. It's free spinning. Might have to get down there this weekend and check it out... Mine makes a single "clink" noise when backing up from the garage in the mornings..
Try taking apart the front and/or rear drive shaft yokes, and lube the splines, where they slide together.(not the grease zerk)
I mean take a small brush and wipe grease on the splines.Tacomas are famous for the "TINK" "CLINK" type noise. Lubing the driveshaft splines usally fixes it.
