Default JBA or TRD Headers

Alright, after listening to you guys speak headers I am looking into purchasing. But, before the purchase want to get some feedback from the know's.

1) Which has the best performance the TRD or JBA.
2) What type of HP increase can I expect?
3) How much will it cost me if I have someone install them.
4) Is there continual maitenance for these.
5) Has anyone Dyno'd the before and after?

Thanks,
Jason

Roughly equal. Both will provide about a 20 to 25 ft-lb torque increase in the 3200 to 3400 RPM range. The TRD tubes are somewhat longer and more equal length than the JBA tubes so (1) the torque increase will start earlier (around 2300 to 2400 RPM instead of the 2500 to 2600 RPM of the JBAs) and (2) the torque curve will be peakier (sharper curve).

2) What type of HP increase can I expect?
Peak HP is measured near redline and is really not that useful a number...unless you run at redline a lot of the time you really ought to be more interested in torque at 3400 RPM than HP at 4800 RPM. Headers on this engine seem to help most for mid range torque rather than peak HP...the TRDs will have the most peak torque; the JBAs will have a little less but over a somewhat broader RPM range. As noted above the torque increase from either is around 20 to 25 ft-lbs (about 8% above stock).

Anywhere from about $200 to over $900...it depends on where you live and who you talk to. The JBAs are much less expensive to install than the TRDs because they're direct bolt-ins. TRDs require welding of new head pipes on the cats and, on your '03, also cutting and welding on the pipes behind the cats because the cats have to be moved backwards (TRD doesn't sell an '03 header...you have to use the ones for the '02s with a lot of welding work done to the pipes). I paid my dealer $425 to install JBAs, if I had wanted TRDs installed the cost would have been more like $600 because of the extra welding. My installation costs were somewhat higher than average.

Only occasional checking the nuts to insure they're staying tight

5) Has anyone Dyno'd the before and after?
Several have dyno'd the JBAs...check member V8Toilet for one. I can't recall much if any dyno information here about the TRDs.

An important note about the TRDs...they're quite a bit more expensive than the JBAs and they can't be ordered with ceramic coating. IMO, it's very important to have the headers coated...it greatly reduces the amount of heat they radiate into the engine compartment. JBAs can be ordered with factory ceramic coating...several of us have done this and are very happy with the results...the coating is very durable/high quality and really insulates the headers.

If you get TRDs and want them coated, you'll have to send them out to a company like Jet Hot (~$200 for coating).

And one final note...according to the mechanic who installed mine, the coated JBAs are a lot less "rumblier" than the uncoated TRDs. If you want to maintain some quiet with your increased power that suggests JBAs; if you want lots more noise to go with your power, then go with the TRDs. However, if you get the TRDs coated, I suspect they too will be less noisy.

I personnally have TRD's.
But i always recommend the JBA's. Why you ask?WELL
#1 Ray(from above post HAS Great Advise! &
I offer 1 more opinion. THEY ARE MUCH EASIER TO INSTALL.
TRD's have to have the flange welded in.
The JBA's are a complete bolt on.
I have installed a ton of both of these Headers, as well as the short tube stone mountains.
The Jba's win hands down in my opinion.

I have been reading the posts about headers too and im leaning toward the JBA b/c of the straight bolt up and now in the group buys someone is offering a discount so i'll probably go in on that!

Default headers or unichip

Vanity Plates has 306.21 with all these mods and I am pushing 293.7 with a supercharger - single tuned exhaust and a unichip -- that is 12.51 horse over my truck -- that will show you a little about the power of the unichip --

What are the votes -- headers or unichip and tuned single exhaust?

PERFORMANCE MODS
· TRD, supercharger,
· ASP, 5.9” overboost pulley 10 psi
· TRD, SS headers
· TRD, limited slip differential
· Custom SS Catback with Silver Bullet Muffler
· Level Ten, valve body
· Denso, (TOY-SUPFP) high-flow fuel pump
--

sTILL WAITING FOR CUSTOM TUNING W/UNICHIP

I would like to see his #'s after he installs his chip --

My truck is at the shop -- waiting for my IPT valve body to come back - ohh yea
