I hear all this great stuff about lockers and LSD's. I love offroading and am mainly on muddy trails down here in the south. What exactly will a lockker do? Can they be automatically or manually turned on and off. Will a locker or LSD be more beneficial? I'd say 1/4 of the time I'm offroad and plan on modding more and more to become a more serious offroader. Thanks for the info. - Ben

Definitely check out the offroad forum. In any case if you are going to be in mud a lot, a locker will do better hands down. As far as being turned on and off, ARB makes one. For a full time locker, you can get a Lockright Locker or The Powertrax. The powertrax is pretty much exactly like the lockright. However, there's a mechanism that cuts out the "click, click,..." in the locker when turning corners. I have the Lockright and it is easy to install yourself. It was affordable and does it's job offroad. A locker will send equal amount of force to each side of the tire all the time. If you are going around a corner, the locker will disengage and that's why you hear the "clicking" sound but, if you are on the gas around the corner, the locker will stay engaged. A bit scary when you are on pavement.
I think I read somewhere that the rear ends were different between the tundra and tacoma. Which would make sense since the locker is not an available option for the Tundra.
No, the Tacoma TRD electric diff is not interchangeable with the Tundra housing.
TRD Tacos use 88-95 V6 8" ring gears.
Standard Tacos use the larger 210MM diffs like our Tundras. Those diffs swap between the two trucks with the difference being the housing and shafts on the Tundra are wider.
The driveline shop i dealt with had never done a Tundra rear end before, but they have now! I got one regeared, locked and new bearings put in it for $880 with tax parts and labor. Thats with me supplying the diff obviously.
The Tundra diff has no threaded adjustments to move the ring gear to and from the pinion gear. You must use shims to adjust that, which makes the labor costly. The bearings are also expensive.
