Default Re: Best oil to run in the 4.7 Tundra?

what should i use for the winter 5w-30 or 10w-30 mobil 1, sequoia 84,000 miles???
You're in So. Cal... winter??? Winter typically is when the temp drops below zero, so unless I'm mistaken, like me in FL, you've got summer all year round.

which one is thicker??
10W30 is thicker at startup, but when they both warm up, theiur viscousities will be very close, almost identical.

i have heard from other people that 10w-30 should be used in the winter and 5w30 in the summer???
In a broad sense, the opposite would make more sense.

and is 5w-30 to thin for 80,000+ miles or should i still continue to use that instead of 10w-40???
Too thin.. no. Might a thicker oil protect better?... probably. Would it be okay to use either 5W30, 10W30, 10W40?... I would say any would do the job admirably.

I would suggest a visit to bobistheoilguy.com... a nice site to learn a lot about oil and other fluids. The most two important lessons I learned though are: 1) the abundance of myths out there, and 2) most people in the business, from salespeople to master mechanics, are as unaware as anyone else when it comes to oil facts.

My motto: Read and research a little, then do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

It has to do with viscocity measured at certain temperatures. It sort of represents the hot and cold ends of the spectrum that your engine is going to to run at.

The thing about synthetic is that when you go beyond the conditions of the states specs, the performance is still good vs. dropping of dramatically. Also, over the longer run synthetic out performs dino oil because there are less additive needed to get the oil to meet the viscosity specs. So there're less to "wear out". Less to wear out means that it last longer.

However, there are synthetic blends with great additives that will perform just as well as mobil 1 while being slightly cheaper.

When it's really, really cold you can still pour out synthetic 10w30 and it pours well enough when you can barely get a dino 5w30 out of the can (even though at a higher temp 5w30 is thinner than the 10w30 and is considered a thinner, winter oil).

You'll be fine to run 10w30 year round. And if if you find 5w30 or 5w40 on sale, that's as good a reason as using that - and it will work fine. The difference is that mobil 1 synthetic 10w30 is fine down to 5 below (and maybe even a bit cold if it's occasional). While the 5w30 would be fine to 25 below and even much colder if you stretch it occasionally.

You'd even be fine to run a 15w50 in synthic year round (for southern california), but it would be better to be a 15w40 instead. The 50 weight is a little overkill and theoretically could put a drag on gas mileage though to be honest, I've never detected it.

In fact, the only way I've been able to tell the differnce between a 5w30 and a 15w50 in our v-8 engines is when I drive up to tahoe and it's 0 degrees and you can hear the engine turn at slightly slower rpms when it cranks over. A petrol 15w should only be run down to about 12 degrees F, but you can get away with a little lower with synthetic - especially if it's only a few times a winter.

However, if you ever decide that you don't want to run synthetic - I'd definitely just run 10w30 year round. Unless you change your oil at 4,000/5,000 mile intervals - which is a waste of good oil. As long as you run mobil 1, you can very comfortably run 10,000 mile intervals (once you get out of warrantee!!!).

But I'd use the Mobil 1 filter, a Pure One filter, or the OEM Toyota filter, or an Amsoil filter if you're going to run at 10,000 mile intervals (and super-sizing is nice.....).

I have a 2000 Tundra Limited 4X4 V8. I currently used the German Brand Lubro Moly SYNTHOIL HIGH TECH 5W40 from Liqui Moly GmbH. This stuff is incredible.

Different oils have different advantages and disadvantages. European oils are made for and specd. for the cars they run them in. Not knocking European oils but the Tundra V8 will run great with almost any oil. Why spend money where you don't have to?

Talking Re: Best oil to run in the 4.7 Tundra?

I use Amsoil 5W-30. It seems to be the best thing to use in hot and sunny Florida. The salesman was full of it. I used to work in finance at a Toyota dealership. They will tell you anything to sell a car. Could anybody recommend a good cat-back exhaust? There is a good amount of choices, just not sure what will work best. New to the site, like what I see.

I have found that for me the best value is Shell ROTELLA® T Synthetic 5W-40.
It fits between Mobil One and conventional oil as far as price and i have gotten my best UOA's during its use.

Castrol GTX 5w30 and a Puralator filter (I was told they are the Toyota supplier) and Toyota service Dept. reccommended the oil if not using original Toyota oil.

Every 5000 and the filter is the same in our 2005 Sienna!

Can someone tell me the oil capacity for the 4.7 V8 Tundra? Nothing under the hood and no where in the book does it list the actual oil capacity of this engine. I'm considering switching to 5w-20 and want to make sure I put the right amount in.

I think it is six quarts...
I use Mobil 1 5w-30 and have for a couple of years in this truck, also use the Mobil 1 filter, have not had any problems, seems to run smoother and the gas milage has increased slightly. Hard to tell if it from the oil, Mobil 1 ATF, Mobil 1 gear oil or a combination of the three.

It boggles my mind, but I've looked and can not find it in the owner's manual. If anyone has an '05, please look in your OM and let me know if you happen to see the oil capacity. 6.75 quarts put the oil right where it needed to be.

Mine has a "Section 8 Specifications" where it lists capacities and dimensions for everything. It is located there.

yeah, 6.5q for the v8. if you run an amsoil sdf-15, you need 7 quarts.

i recently switched to 10w30 after talking with my local amsoil rep about the age of the engine and the startup piston knock (it has worked well, btw). the mobil1 stuff is all about the same, temperature-wise...10w30 is good for an anchorage winter, 5w30 is good for a fairbanks winter, and 0w30 will do an engine well in antarctica. that stuff flows easily even when it's really, really cold.

if i'd known then what i know now i'd have always been running synth 10w30 in my truck, wouldve had less wear on the engine at startup before operating temperature in cold weather.
