any good synthetic. Amsoil, Mobil 1, etc... (I personally am currently running Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30).

Make sure you use a good quality filter as well... It is just as important (if not more so) than the oil. I highly, highly, highly recommend the Amsoil SDF-15 filter.

I run Mobile1 synthetic 10w30 and a PureOne oill filter. The main thing is to use a good oil and if you use non-synthetic oil I would change it at 3000 miles. I run the synthetic to 5000 miles and I have heard of other members running it as high as 10,000 miles.

I have used most of the above with oil analysis. You are good in most conditions for 10-12 thousand miles on most if not all of the above. Use an oversized filter, either amsoil, or Mobil 1 and don't waste time or money changing oil too often. Oil analysis really pays off in telling you how much oil life you have left.

If you want to be super conservative, change at 8-10 thousand, and forget the oil analysis (after doing one).

I'd agree 100%. After the warrantee had worn off I'd run mobil1 synthetic (5w30 or 10w30 if you're in a year round warm climate) at 10,000 to 12,000 miles *and* run it with an Amsoil SDF 15 filter. I'd do at least one oil analysis on *your* engine to make sure that flies but it's 99.9% sure it will.

But any good synthetic in the 5w30 or 10w30 range will work fine along with a good filter so just use what's locally available.

If you choose to run regular oil, change it every 5,000 miles but still use one of the best filters (amsoil, mobil1, pureone).

But wait until you hit 10,000 miles with regular oil until you start putting synthetic in. You'll get better gas mileage on the front side. On a diesel engine (vs gas) this is much more critical to wait until 10k.

If you use synthetic but don't change the intervals to 10,000 miles or more it's going to be more expensive and you'll be throwing away good oil. It's kind of like throwing away tires when only half the tread is worn. There may be good reasons for doing that for some people but it's a waste of perfectly good performance for most people.

I prefer to use the highest viscosity oil permitted in the owner's manual...10W-30 in the summer and 5W-30 in cold winter areas. If the engine is working hard & hot, I like a 15W-40 or 5W-40 oil. I know, this isn't in our U.S. or Canadian owner's manual, but the same 2UZ-FE engine in Australia has 20W-50 recommended by Valvoline & BP.

Among conventional oils, I like Chevron/Havoline, Pennzoil, and Castrol. Among synthetics, Mobil 1, Schaeffer, Amsoil, and Castrol.

The new oil spec, ILSAC GF-4, will soon be on the shelves instead of the current GF-3. This is a tougher spec for the oil, and requires higher quality (higher cost) ingredients. Some oil makers are blending low quality (cost) conventional oil with some synthetic as a correction fluid to meet the spec, and trumpeting it as synthetic blend. It is, but it isn't anything special. An equally good or maybe better oil can be made from higher quality (cost) conventional oil. ConocoPhillips is one of the oil makers using this cheap synthetic blend to get their GF-4 oil at at the lowest production cost. Their brands are Conoco, Phillips, 76, & Kendall.

Don't run a synthetic beyond the recommended 7500 miles without a satisfactory oil analysis to protect your warranty.

Default Oil from the factory?

I just got my Double Cab on Saturday and one of the last things the salesman said to me was to not change the intial factory oil until after 4500 miles because it's break-in oil. Is this true and what type of oil does the truck come pre-filled with?

I think that is B.S. Alot of people only run the first oil around a 1000 miles and then change it to get rid of any "junk" (metal shavings, ect) that may be in the engine.

I agree, why on earth would you run longer on the "break in oil" than you would on regular motor oil (if that is what it ships with). It was recommended to me that the break in oil change should occur around 1000~1500 miles and there should be regular oil in the engine. Once that period has lapsed and the oil changed go synthetic.

I believe only Honda has a special break in oil.

Dump that oil early. It can't do any harm and might do some good.

5k miles on the initial oil!!! EEK thats really bad.

do a change at 500 miles. it can ONLY do good things for your motor.

i myself have used synthetics in the past, but i prefer a quality conventional oil now. it just suits my driving style(i dont drive much). so i can change the dino oil every 2500 for less than sythetic at 7500 or so. i cant imagine running that long without a change though. when i used synthetics i still changed it at 3000.

Although intuitively it would seem that the salesman should know what he is talking about, for the most part this will never be the case. There is no reason to leave factory oil in for any amount of time.

Also not switching to syn oil untill it is broken in is an old wives tail. Syn oil is good, but you engine is still going to wear in or break in. Syn does not stop all wear.
