Default timing belt replacement guide

Just a idea to those doing the replacement on there iforce v8 timing belts which should be change around 90k to 100k. make sure your idler no1 and idler no2 (part number 13505-of010 & 13503-0f010) are replaced in addition to your t /belt tensioner's. the total of all these parts is around $149.00 but worth it in the long run because your engine is protected against wear and tear. also make sure since your already having these items replaced, you might as well replace the water pump too which is around $100.00 dollars from a toyota dealership...

make sure whoever is doing timing belts is doing more then just changing the belt because overall some additional parts are required for a good job...

I thought replacement of timing belts should be at 60K.
Does anyone know if the '05 will be chain driven or maybe cam driven?

Is the '05 V6 chain driven taken from the 4Runner? If so that would be great w/o having to change it out.

Thee '05 2UZ-FE uses a timing belt, the 1GR-FE a timing chain.

Sorry not very technical in the above statement.
Thee '05 2UZ-FE uses a timing belt = '05 V8?
the 1GR-FE a timing chain = '05 V6?
Is that correct?

Yes the 2uz-fe is the V8, the 1gr-fe is the V6 engine

V8,
When I had my '95 Toyota pickup with the 22r engine I believe it had a chain. Around that time many cars were switching or had switched to belts. My overall impression is belts are bad, they snap and will cause a lot of damage to an interference engine. Must be a reason why they are used so extensively but I don't know why. I haven't heard of chains breaking, they'll usually start to stretch and your performance will suffer, so you'll know when they need to be changed(and that's usually at 200k+). So why do all new cars/trucks use belts? Anyone? /Mike

I had a '73 Chevy Luv (my first ride) and the timing chain broke at around 100k. I have heard of others breaking but I don't recall any specifics.

I would think that a belt would be lighter weight and help performance & fuel economy. What about gear & shaft drive (similar to a distributor)?

My '93 P/U had a chain. Broke @ 157,000. Actually, one of the guides broke, but the result was the same. Loud noise followed by silence. There was no warning before it went.

How hard-set is that 90k? Many change intervals are based on the average 10-15k/year. Well, I'm approaching 90k in just 24 months on my '03.

Whaddaya think? I'd hate to tear this thing down if I can get another year out of it and change it at 130k (which would probably be a much better time frame for the water pump), but obviously, I can't afford for it to break.

You need to work for toyota rlockyear, all the driving you do! That says a lot about how well these trucks hold up to the abuse! (highway abuse that is)

Default You might sleep better...

You might sleep better if you just get it over with...then you'll be good for another couple of years also.

Good point, but I'm not going to be too paranoid about 90k. I'll probably wait for the week off during the holidays. That'll probably put me at about 96k, but give me a couple of extra days to get everything back together if need be.

Hmm... underdrive pulley time?

I am at approx 115k and have not done the timing belt yet. I am aware that it's recommended for 90k intervals, but I don't loose sleep over it for sure. It's on my list of 'to do' things but I plan on doing it myself, so I need to set aside a free weekend.

Anyway, it's a good idea to follow the recommended intervals, but I have yet to hear about a Tundra timing belt breaking. Hopefully I will not be the first (knock on wood)
