Is there an upgrade kit for my 2000 Tundra for the transmission?
I have been reading about the transmission failures in the 2000 and 2001 Tundras and I am getting worried about mine. I don't have any problems with my tranny and I changed out the fluid to amsoil to extend its life.
80% of the time I use my truck it's for towing a 4000lb boat. I take it out of overdrive if the torque converter unlocks and I don't beat on my truck. If there is an upgrade I would rather spend $300-$600 on an upgrade compared to several thousand to rebuild.
Does anyone know what the difference between the 2000 and the 2003 models are in the tranny?
My son owns a 2000 tundra 4x4 that he bought used about a year ago. It currently has about 82,000 miles on it. On a recent return trip to Ft Bragg, NC his transmission conked out on him on I-95 about 100 miles from his destination. He was stranded in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere and had a high towing fee not to mention the cost to fix the transmission. I used to have a lot of faith in Toyota products but now I'm beginning to wonder.
my tranny crapped out too. i thought it was because of the helix power tower i put on the throttle... had no idea the 00' models had flawed transmissions. luckily i did it with about 59.5k miles so toyota replaced it for free. any idea if this new tranny (as of last february) has had all the bugs worked out?
My '00 Tundra, ltd, acces cab 4x4 had been a great truck until tonight when the tranny grenaded on my way to eat. I didn't know these trucks had problems until reading them after being quoted 4 grand for a new transmission. NO WAY!!! I've also had to replace the front calipers on the truck at 60K miles. I'm running 295/75R16's but that shouldn't crap out a tranny on a Toyota. I'm very disappointed and leary of another Toyota truck purchase.
Joel,
Never tow in overdrive. The overdrive gear cluster is the weak link in these transmissions. Towing in 3rd will likely add life to the transmission. A PAO synthetic like Mobil 1, Amsoil, Schaeffer, Royal Purple, or Red Line has higher film strength than convention oil including so-called "full synthetic" made from Group III very highly refined oil. This also might add life to the transmission.
You also might consider adding an ATF filter in the cooler line (about $25), and sending ATF samples to the lab, say every 20,000 miles. You'll know when it is time to change that high priced fluid. If the lab determines unusual wear, you'll know when it's time to sell the truck.
I'm not aware of any transmission mods that will extend the life of the transmission excluding off-road type abuse. IPT would be the folks to ask.
Ken

Oh great now everyones tranny in their 2000 is blowing up on them. This is great news
Mine seems fine but one strange thing i did notice today was that i hear a somewhat quiet sqealing sound coming from the truck. At first i thought it might have been the brakes because my driver side front always sqeaks but this was different. it would squeal and when the tranny shifted to the next gear it got a bit louder, and would die off when i let off the gas. Now you guys really got me worried. I take good care of her so i just pray she will do the same

fwiw, i have 105K on my 2000 and the tranny hasnt blown yet.
ipt has a valve body upgrade that will help. the valve body isn't a direct solution, but i think john @ ipt would be the best-bet guy to know of a direct solution to the gears fouling if there is one...i think his username is importperformancetrans...?
Does anyone know exactly what was changed on the 03 tranny from the previous models? If it was a gear change, thrust washer or something simple it may be possible to changed those parts on an older tranny unless the parts just will not fit do to a change in dimensions. Any upgrade for a few hundred dollars beats 3-4 grand for a new or rebuilt tranny.
I can say that I had never had any tranny problems with my '00 tundra. When I sold it, it was just under 200K w/ lots of trailer towing and off-roading.
They are not all defective. I did run Mobil 1 Syn ATF and changed it every 20K

My '00 (actually manufactured in 99) had the automatic conk out after about 40K miles. I had the 100K extended warranty, so it was fully covered. The dealr seemed to know a thing or two about the problem. When I would put the lever into 'drive' it didn't go into gear. Sometimes when driving, it would SLAM into gear during a shift.
Since I had the tranny repaired, and put 32.5 inch tires on it I developed the shift/SLAM again. I changed the tranny fluid over to Amsoil ATF and I haven't had a peep out of it in over 20K miles. The truck now has 120K on it and going strong. I think there were some issues with '00 trannies...
