Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Gas Pedal touchy when starting off.", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have a 03' limited trd and the gas pedal is very touchy when you first hit the gas. Anyone else have this problem?? Is there any solution to this problem??
I have an '03 V8 and the fly-by-wire throttle is touchy. I have just adjusted my driving to compensate.
Since it's electronically controlled I wonder if it's adjustable in the computer?
I'll bet most Toyota dealers wouldn't know.
Yeah, my gas pedal is very "touchy" too. I don't mind it though, because as george60 mentioned I just adjusted to it. I tried to warn my brother when he drove my truck once, and when it took off on him, he smiled and said "It shifts real smoothly."

Good morning greener -
I too have an '03. I had to get used to the touchy gas - The 2003 no longer uses the accelerator cable and instead uses a "Throttle Position Sensor". It's possible the Unichip may help out with a smoother acceleration, but I am unsure. Search the Unichip threads to see if they have any information on the Throttle Position Sensor.
Also, you can read about the TPS here and information about Drive-By-Wire on 2003 Tundras here. Just keep a light foot until you get used to it - My main qualm is trying to go slow around a corner and I barely tap the gas and it downshifts quite easily, causing a bit of spin in the rear - no big deal though Take it easy

Unichip tested and tuned my truck, and it was second 03 Tundra unichip PnP installed . We ran a test and found out at what position the truck hits open loop (85% of full throttle). At 1/2 throttle, you have used 85% of power available, thus indicating the throttle is front loaded and the last quarter of pedal yields next to nothing. Unichip will smooth performance, but cannot change the throttle position sensor issue. Give it a few months and you will adjust. I drove 3 different 03's and they were all the same. I caught a bit of rubber on my first test drive....purely by accident.
i have an 03 as well and if you ask me, its not touchy enough! I LOVE TORQUE!!! please nobody reply and say its my 33 inch tires because even with stock size tires and exhaust it was still too weak for me. this could all be because my car before this was a built 69' camaro what do you think? but besides all that, i read a thread on this post somewhere that 1st gear only gives you half power until 3000 rpm. well thats just not enough for me. i want to be able to take off of the line quickly. my friend has a v6 s10 stock and hangs with me in first gear. can anyone say "BOO." but the s10 against a 02 tundra, the s10 gets how do you say, raped? this irritates me. dont get me wrong, im not looking to street race or anything, but i want the power there when i want it. does anyone have any suggestions?

Not to take over this thread. But with reading a large amount of information here JBA headers, unichip and a s/c would be the best results for performance gains.

I believe you are overstating this issue. If you look at 1/4 mile times the 03's are very close to even the 2000's. This would not be the case if your scenario was true. The earlier Tundra's do the same....DudeBoy (00 Tundra) has run 0-60 times at 3/4 throttle starts and beat his full throttle starts.
