... I picked up my spark plugs from the dealer the other day. I noticed on the passenger side of the block, there are "widgets" that are bolted over top of the plugs on that side. The driver side doesn't have the same setup. Those are more easily accessible. In a previous thread, someone stated the dealer gave them 2 different sets of plugs. I received 6 of the same flavor. Any "gotcha's" while replacing the plugs ??? ... and what's up with the plugs on the passenger side ??? Any assistance is greatly appreciated...
thery are all the same, i replaced mine when i was supercharging, i put in bosch 4+, are you up grading? they were 5.99 a pop, kind of spendy, but nothing but the best for my baby.
just unscrew the "widgets" and each unit pulls out. i think that's the brain for the distributerless sparking system.
Q:Any "gotcha's" while replacing the plugs ??? ...
A:yea don't drink a lot of beer and forget to screw the widgets back in like i did.
Recommended 30K maintenance. Yes Toyota sells both. But, you can buy Platinum or Iridium plugs many places. There is a How-To in the "Garage" for a sparkplug change.

Besides the change interval, is there any additional benifit from the platinum plugs vs. the traditional plugs in the V-6? I have heard from more than one toyota mechanic that the older toyotas (ie. the 22R trucks) that the platinum 4 tip bosch plugs aren't that great for the engine and they recommend the ND plugs.
Took care of my plugs over the weekend. Anyone attempting to do this, be sure to have an array of ratchet extensions and universals !! Plus, you gotta remove the air intake plumbing to get to the passenger side plugs. I think the designers of these trucks should be made to do maintenance. They might change things a bit. Truck runs even smoother now ...WooHoo!!

in my experience with the 3.4...the stock plugs are the fine and are relatively inexpensive...now when i supercharged my 3.4 i went with a cooler plug...down from the stock cold rating of 5 to a cold rating of 7..the truck now has less ping..i dont think plugs make that much or a performance difference
if your not supercharged..there is no reason to spend money on platinum plugs...stick with stock plugs....IMO

Hmmm....interesting. On my 2000 V6, all the original 6 plugs were the same (Denso's). I guess they just dip into a bucket of plugs and use whatever they come up with.... ;-)
Went to the parts dept. at the local Toyota shop and wanted to see just how much the twin type plug was going to cost, at 1.50 each this was the cheepest Toyota part I have ever purchased. Asked the guy about the different options and he said without hesitation that the more expensive plugs would be waisting my money and go with the standard plugs. Can't wait to change them out tomorrow, have some anti-seeze goop somewhere and will post the before and after plug photos fyi
