The newer VVTi Toyota/Lexus V6's have a thread-on valve,so they probably have done the same for the 4-cylinders. My guess for the change,less chance of a vacuum leak at higher mileage since there's no rubber grommet that hardens with heat and oil contact. The pink coating is a anti-seize or sealer.
It won't hurt replacing the valve,the usual replacement interval is at 60,000 miles. Removal isn't hard,should be a 17mm wrench or socket.
