I hope I don't get banned for this heresy, but has anyone thought about or actually put a small block Chevy motor and trans in a Tundra.
I was driving my 04 last night, enjoying how good it sounds even all stock and thought I really would like to have a 6 speed manual trans in it.
If you want some serious HP I would think that would be the way to go, probably a different rear end also.
What do you think?
Regards,
Bruce
Mention this again and you WILL be banned!
Naw - just messin' with ya!
I've actually thought about doing something like that down the road if I have the time and $ to do it. Of course, it couldn't be my daily driver then either!

All I have to say is why would I want my Toyota to leak oil & smoke in the morning ????????
Just kidding, I thought about swapping in a Ford small block, but i dont have that kind of motivation anymore.
I know the old LC's used to run real well with a small block chevy.
Helped on a few of those. 350/turbo350 trans and a ford 9".
sounds like a good plan, if ya have the time and $$$$$$

I don't want to sound like an a-hole,but if you want a Chevy-powered truck get a friggin Chevy/GMC truck.
Like Victor said,if you have the time and $ it's possible. You'll need to get basically every drivetrain and electronics-related component from the donor vehicle, from the wiring harnesses,ECU,and evaporative emissions hose/line/cannister if you want to be emissions compliant. I'd also find a cheap beater car to drive around while the truck is under construction.
Want to do a 6-speed swap? I have a factory V8 bellhousing available. The rest of the swap (flywheel, clutch, pedal assembly and clutch hydraulics, crossmember, driveshaft, transfer case if 4WD) is your responsibility.

The only time I wish I had bought a Chevy or a Ford is all the aftermarket accessories for them. I go thru Truckin' magazine every month. There are a lot of cool ideas and accesories but rarely are they for Toyota.
Ya ya - I know... I was just thinking long-term, down the line, etc... off-road use only and all that, so I wouldn't have to worry about smog, etc.
But - if I wanted 6 speed now, I'd go with the 05 Taco - awesome truck!
Jeff
Kinda off the subject, but I hope these first new Tacomas, don't start out like my 2000 Tundra did. Brakes 15 times, cracked exhaust manifolds, seat belt retractor twice, wore out fabric on door panel after 12,000miles,loose radio antennae ,ect
im not gonna ask why you want to do that. i will say that those insane ppls over at lextreme have been putting toyota V8s in just about anything they can get thier grubby paws on, even boats! they have been stuffing the 1uz in a varety of domestic models too, even supras.
the ease of maintanance and $$$ of owning a GM motor has its benifets. good bang for the buck and easy to find parts. only problem is passing "recon", emmissions, safety check, and making all the guages and a/c , power steering work. that is the expensive/headache part.
if you do, start with a project tundra. thats what id like to look for.

~ been there, done that, got the panties ~
Forget about putting a bowtie 350 or 383 stroker in my tundra.....
Im on the other way of thought -what about taking out my supercharged toyota engine and putting it a Geo!
well, what about putting a pair of godzillas on the 8 and shoehorning it in a celica? wait...didn't someone...
bruce, i am planning on installing a high pinion 9" ford rear end, 35 spline end to end, full float, with svo discs & ebrake...and later, a '609' hybrid in the front to match. my application is a little different of course, but if you needed a seriously stout rear end and driveshaft, that's the way to go...lighter than a dana 60 and quite possible stronger, plus it costs less. also, you can convert the tundra rear to full float and it's quite strong, food for thought a v6 will twist the splines off a shaft while running in the granny gear on 39s with the rear spooled, if the shaft was improperly heat treated...that's the only one ive heard they busted yet. the ford rear end conversion tho, thats custom, but if you want you can even get a 40 spline spool, probably totally unnecessary for most mortals.
i really like this engine. dunno why i'd want another engine of similar size by a big-3 manufacturer. if toyota imported something beefier, id buy it.
Hmmmm...All I can say is, what a great way to destroy a perfectly reliable truck. I'll have to defer to Eddies comment for the second half of my thoughts
I wanted some more power and performance....so I bought a 69 Mach 1. Now I have a reliable truck, and a fast car that I work on weekly. My new 69 Mach 1
Bet some were wondering where Vdogs been?? I actually have to post on forums.vintage-mustangs.com to get the inside scoop on keepin a Ford running.
If you want more power, learn to fabricate and weld. Don't ruin a good truck.
I have a mazda rx7. Its very hard to find aftermarket for many of the parts on it. I learned to weld and do minor fabrication and now make many of my own parts like exaust, intake, and minor engine components.
As far as building internals for the engine, most aftermarket companies will custom grind stuff like cams and crankshafts, and will fab up pistons and rods. And they won't charge too much more than they do for big 3 parts.
I'd check into that before undergoing something as extreme as swapping a different brand motor in.
