I called Herb Chambers today just to get a kick out of how much they would charge me for putting in the charger and sure enough did I get a kick. They said $550 for the job...I mean that is a 1/3 of the price of the unit...I asked the guy if he had done it before and he said yeah plenty of times it takes about 6 hours. I asked well then does the price cover the cost of the beer or is that extra? I mean 6 hours???? come on ...first timers do it in 6 from what Ive read...after the first time it is cut in half and takes about 3 hours.

Shouldnt cost that much, you should be looking at $300 tops, the v8 install prices have gone up at least 200 dollars everywhere!

Some dealers are outrageous. I had mine installed for $360. When I went to have it taken off recently, the normal service manager I deal with wasn't there. They quoted me $720 to take it off. Yeah Right! Needless to say I went back when my normal service manager was there and had it taken off and put back to stock, including swapping my thermostats back for $360. And you are right, install time is really closer to 3 hours. When first installed I dropped it off at 8 am, and was driving away with it at noon.

I think the price of these installs is ridiculous 720??!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!? i mean it takes 30 mins to take it off! It just boggles me on how they can charge so much for removing some belts and turning some bolts...probably the easiest bang for the buck they get!

Labor rate = $90 per hour, and actually I was just told that has been raised by a few dollars. So where they got the $720 from I have no clue. Oh wait, that's right, they said because it takes longer to put back to stock.
Anyway, the $360 price I thought was pretty fair though.
The real laughable part was the tech quoting me the $720 to take it off did offer $500 for the charger if I wanted to get rid of it

The mechanics typically get $90 an hour. Multiply that by the number of hours it takes to do the install, and you'll have your answer.

Unfortunately the mechanics at the dealerships only get a fraction of the $90/hr. The dealership get the lions share of this rate.
Many of these guys will work on their own time at half or even 40% of the dealer rate and be happy as hell. Plus they will charge "actual time"(most of the time its half of the book time) instead of the "book rate" which is seems to be calculated as though the mechanic has one leg, one arm, blindfolded and just finished his/her initial training. Obviously some work that needs big tools etc... would still need to be done at the shop, but many projects can be done in your buddies garage.
