    Question '05 Overdirve

With the new '05, 5 speed A/T on the tundra and 2WD, does anyone know if you have to turn off the overdrive when driving in city streets w/o towing?

I've spoken to a service advise from my local Toyota dealer, and he has mentioned that whenever driving on a local streets turn off the overdirve, but on the manual recommended that always leave overdrive on except when going on mountail roads or towing.

Please let me know your experience and advise. Thanks in advance.

When driving in city streets my 05 stays between 1500-2000rpm and I don't think it goes into 5th gear until I'm going about 80km/hr or 50mph.So I would say no you don't need to turn off the overdrive.

Do what the manual says. Let the transmissoin decide when to shift unless you are towing or want to keep it out of OD on a steep grade.

Assuming an automatic transmission's clutches are capable of a certain number of shifts before requiring repair/replacement (whether it's 5,000, 50,000, 500,000 or more), it seems logical to stretch those shifts over as long a period as possible. That's likely the logic the Tech is using. The manufacturers on the other hand are more concerned about meeting fuel economy standards than having mega mile transmissions.

Honda started specifying 5W20 motor oil for all climates in some of their vehicles starting in 2002 and rumor has it that it was primarily because of the miniscule extra mpg the lighter oil provides. Many Honda owners prefer heavier oil (like 5W30) however and Honda Techs generally don't discourage them from using it. There was (and is) a lot of disagreement among Honda owners about which oil to use and we probably won't all agree here about locking out overdrive.

    Default Shifting

When cold has anyone experienced your transmission slow to shift into fourth (between 45 and 50MPH) and the RPM going up like it hits neutral before shifting?? Mine only does this once in the AM after sitting all night in the cold, then everything is fine till the next AM or everything gets cold again.

It was MINUS 6 degrees here this AM and that was fun.
