Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Replacing Serpentine Belt", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
So I broke down and had a shop replace the belt today. On my way home I noticed a small whinning noise that would get higher pitched with engine rpm. Anyone have any suggestions?
Top idler pulley bearing will make that noise, almost has a bad PS pump sound to it. The pulley and bearing are purchased as one piece from the dealer. Tried to buy just the bearing from a number of bearing wholesalers, but the exact size isn't listed even though I had the part number. Apparently the manufacturer only produces it for Toyota. The ID and OD are readily available , however the thickness is oddball, can buy either thinner or thicker bearings, each of which are not close enough to do the job properly. The cost of the complete unit wasn't all that bad as I remember anyway, and two minutes to install. Was able to just slack the belt without removing, and change the pully ( just one bolt and east to get at ).
Just finished cleaning up from doing my belt. I think the belt portion of the job was 15 minutes. Then there was the cleaning of various engine parts and covers, removing corrosion from the positive battery terminal and putting everything away. 1 hour total. Hearing from others helps build the confidence to do the job solo.
Thanks

Let me run this by everyone. I am not a engine guru but I just purchased the replacement belt for my truck and was wondering how difficult this is to replace and if anyone has a step by step I could walk through.
You had to change belt on your 2007 Tundra? This seems strange because their is a TSB for the 06's to fix the squeal. why would their not be one for an 07 for free??

Look at the starting date of this thread, I think he originally had an 03 Tundra.

I finally changed mines due to the horrible squeak at cold startups. I thought it was a lubrication problem, but with the truck at 57K and still has the original toyota belt, I see no reason not to change it. I used a napa replacement belt, but kept the old one just in case.
