Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "S&S headers rusting big time!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I put these headers on my truck a few months back and they are rusting like crazy. I thought the coating they had would last but no way. I don't remember what thickness they are but at this rate how long will they last before the rust eats through?
I don't think the weather should've affected the coating this bad????
I'll post pictures soon. Does anyone else have this problem with these headers????
I'm really bummed, for the price I paid you'd think I could be able to ask for replacements but even if that was possible I would be without a truck for 4-8 weeks from sending back to receiving and install. I certainly can't afford that!!!!!!!!
This majorly sucks!!!!

Mine have red crud baked on the tubes, but it isn't rust, just mud.

Take a mild 3M scrub pad to them. If the red comes off easily and the coating is still showing then it's not rust. This coating is able to be polished with a 3M pad. If you need more info check Jethots website.
Mine too have a red coloration but it is not rust.

Along with IMDONE, I was one of the first to recieve the S&S headers. I gave a detailed summary of installation and performance results on the forum. Fantastic addition to the 4.7L Tundra V-8 as far as performance. Fast forward 2 1/2 years and the ceramic coating is all chipping off, there is rust and a hole through in one area, Loren, nor anyone else, at S&S will return a call on my lifetime ceramic coating. I live in Georgia which has realtively high humidity and I drive my truck every day.
I am some kind of "not very happy" with S&S - these were expensive and a biotch to install. Since they don't return calls nor honor their lifetime coating warranty, I will be looking for something else, dammit.

That's sad to hear, especially since I've got a set of S&S headers on my truck. No rust on mine yet. I'm glad that I kept the stock exhaust as it might get reinstalled in the future.
Where exactly did the rust hole appear? Can you post a few pictures?
Don't we go directly to JetHot for coating issues?
I hope things work out for you.

I'm in the same boat as you. Mine are rusting as well, but I don't have a hole in there yet. While I don't have my stock manifolds anymore like Paul does, I do have my JBA's collecting dust in the garage. Once the S&S's have finished doing their thing the JBA's will be back on. I, too, am "not very happy" with S&S.

I guess I don't feel as stupid for buying these things anymore. I've got a few of you with me.
Just as an update you might find future problems with your cats. Yes, I did say cats! Apparently the cats, according to my local muffler shop, are nothing more than conventional converters, that is they are cheap. I got one that went down but since I had the stock I was able to cut and paste those on. I wrote a whole thread on this problem
Just thought I'd squeeze the wound and add some more lemon and salt!!!

Has anyone ever tried spraying the headers with the high temp paint to prevent rust? I have my callipers and drums painted, before I did it there were getting small rust spots. After sanding them down and putting on a nice coat they looked great. I'v had this done for over a year, maybe close to 2 years and theres no signs of rusting.

I have never seen a ceramic coating that lasted. Usually they do just a bit better than a decent high heat paint from a rattle can. After wasting enough money on coatings over the years, now I just order my headers uncoated, sandblast them, spray two wet coats of good high heat aluminum paint from rattle cans such as Spectra or VHT. Recoat as needed. You will with ceramic anyways.
heyy i notcied ur having problems with your headers... I kno this is off the topic but to you like your S&S headers... I suggest you just send them out to get recoated

HA HA , he's tried contacting them and the phone, " RING RING RING's" and continued without answer or leaving messages without a returned phone call and is/has continual rejections.
I want DYNATECH HEADERS to make some headers for the 4.7L but I need 100 people. D@mn
I have a list of people "interested", "Wanting", these to pass onto them soon. I had been instructed to wait until receiving these requests to pass them on and have them quote consider making these. Once production goes through all the high performance motors other than Toyota engines, Namely the BIG THREE. Sometime in 07' these headers may exist with persistance and namely a list that will conceive these into a production state. Again this is only after engineering gives the go-ahead after testing all years of our truck
