Default Engine Sounds under WOT

I assume most of the members here sometimes accelerate under WOT because one. Its fun, you feel the power. And ive actually heard its GOOD for the engine. Im still a bit unsure about that second bit though. Anyhow, I usually dont just hammer down the pedal to the floor from a dead stop because i cant imagine thats good for it. And i really dont like the sound the engine makes when its doing that because of the cracked manifold. (ex. not hotrod sounds!)

But what im really wondering about is the sounds the truck makes when shifting under WOT. Going through first gear it doesnt pull too much till it gets to 3000+ then at about 3500 really opens up. And keps going till redline then shifts and this is where i hear a sound something like squeaky belts. Not that loud but that type or sound. Possibly it really is my belt loosing traction at that moment? I put the gatorback on a couple weeks ago and havent heard a single peep out of it since though. It does the same when ****fing from second to third and by this time i have let off the throttle.

Also what are the general comments on running WOT and how it might positively, or negatively affect the drivetrain and engine.

It is your belt. Mine does the same thing. I guess with all that momentum then the tranny shifts and slows down the engine but the alternator (ect.) is still wanting to go fast and the belt will slip some and sqeal. Sound reasonable?

WOT is good and bad...from standstill it causes the most stress on the drivetrain so i wouldn't do this if it can be avoided, but when driving down the road it's been my exerience that it's very good for the engine to do this pretty regularly....my favourite place is merging into traffic on the highway from feeders because the truck is going fast enough that the drivetrain is not being overly stressed and it serves a purpose..well thats what i tell myself anyway ...

i can't tell u the amount of vehicles where i work that go into the shop because the engine is using gas and not running right(missing, etc.) just because of running em at strictly low revs....i got everyone who asked my opinion to drive at higher RPM and of course accelerate at WOT and the problems dissapeared within a week or so in every case....

carbon builds up on the head and that causes nothing but problems...

i don't abuse vehicles usually(most of us break the tires loose now and then, don't we?) but i DO drive em....the rev limiter is there for a reason but being auto u will never hit the limiter before the tranny shifts if the truck is running properly....

my t100 has 211k on it and my lex has 195k miles and both run great..as a matter of fact when some coworkers got into my vehicles and saw the odomoter themselves and drove in the vehicles they went out and either got lex's or toys within a few months..matter of fact one of em is buying my t100 ...

Driving around with a cracked manifold is deffinitely not good. The engine can suck in cooler air, and over time waste a valve. Your fuel mileage is not as good as it could be either.

The design of this motor (4.7 DOHC) dictates higher rpm power than say an old 350 or 454 Chevy push rod motor. Mine is the same way, starts at 3K, runs like a bat out of hell from 3500rpm and up.

I dont use WOT unless im passing, towing or street racing. I agree with the other guy that from a dead stop it puts the most stress on the drive train. In normal day to day driving, I dont need WOT to get around with all the traffic.

Hi,

We just did a dyno run here in NorCAL. This is probably as close to the sound you are looking for. Check out my gallery and look at video. you will have a different Idea which exhaust sounds best under WOT. Also check out Dyogim Video post.

OUTCOME: Dyno run in Sacramento, CA - January 15th!

Enjoy.
