Default TRD Duals vs. Banks Monster Exhaust

Anyone have any experience with the Banks Monster exhaust?

Banks Monster Exhaust

I have previously owned a TRD Dual setup on an AC and sold the truck. I want to add a system to my DC and am finding it harder to find the TRD duals.
I recently came across the Banks system and wondered if anyone had any knowledge of the performance and sound vs. the TRD dual setup.

I really liked the TRD sound but the low end power loss sucked. Wondering if the Banks system is the way to go now?

thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Lex,

In case you haven't read the thread yet. Here are the dyno results for the banks exhaust. As far as a comparison to the trd dyno you might want to do a little searching for that.

I don't think I have seen a member purchase one of the Banks yet.

I however am really interested to see how it works because a 3" exhaust sounds really good on this truck.

3" also looks big coming out of the assend too!!!

Default Banks

Like has been said numerous times in past threads, 3" pipe is way too big for a 285 CI engine. It will kill low end torque. Banks claims a 76% reduction in back preasure. That would not help anything except high RPM power.

My only question (playing devils advocate ) is why would they put out an exhaust knowing, with all the stated research, that is too big and would kill the low end? I don't think a company would sabotage themselves would they?

My guess would be MONEY. Folks like the "Big is better" idea. And the large chrome tip plays into it well. 3" pipe. 4" tip. Yeaaaa, it's got to work!

Banks specilizes in diesels. Why is he jumping on the gas engine exhaust band wagon? Money of course. Most folks who buy the product will never put their vehicle on a Dyno. As long as it sounds good and pulls hard at WOT, they will be satisfied.

I belive what most folks here on this board who have tried different systems are saying. The larger you go, the less low RPM torque. It just makes sence.

I know when I took my TRD duals off last month I felt a large increase in low end torque. It was most noticible right off of idle. I did notice the truck does not pull as hard from 70MPH to where the computer cuts off at 105MPH with the stock exhaust back on.

Any further input???? I am really on the fence here.

TRD Duals or Banks single exhaust?

And advantage to it being a single outlet?

One 3" pipe is still smaller than two 2.5" pipes... I would think even if it isn't optiomal for low end it would still beat the TRD duals.

What are your priorities when it comes to sound and power? Does one take priority or are you trying to get the best of both?

Well I guess that is a hard question. I want a nice sounding exhaust like theTRD one but don't want the low end power loss that the TRD one gives. The DC is already underpowered in my opinion. I don't plan on adding anything else, like headers or intake or SC. Just exhaust.
And I know, I know, exhaust alone will not give any big gains. That I am very aware of.

arent intested in just swapping out the muffler? Heck of a lot cheaper and you wont loose any power...weld a nice tip on the stock piping. Thats what I did (3.5")

You've got to put headers on it!!! From what I gained and lost with the TRD duals, I'm now happy with my nice quite stock system. And my headers of course.

Well I need to make a decision here of what i am going to do. I have an opportunity for some TRD Duals at a great price (used) or to try the Banks system, again at a great price.

I guess my last question is this....The TRD is not a true dual system w/ the air exiting 2, 2.5" pipes. Is this worse than having a system w/ a single outlet w/ a 3" pipe?

I my logic, it seems the single outlet would be better w/ less power loss.
Anyone Anyone....Help me out here.
