Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "'05 4.7L VVTi and headers..Who's got them?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm looking for any 2005 Tundra or Sequoia owners who have put aftermarket headers on their vehicles. I've been looking at the manifolds on my 2005 Sequoia and the angles / O2 sensors look to be identical to my old 2003 tundra. I can't see any extra plumbing going into the manifolds either. I do have to say that the heat shields look different from my 2003 Tundra's heat shields, but they contour to the manifolds so tightly that I can't see how there would be any extra plumbing underneath them.
I talked to a tech from JBA who told me that there have been several 2005 Tundra owners who have put JBA headers on their trucks with no problems. I then brought up the fact that the 05 Tundra's and Sequoia's are VVTi motors and that the dealership shows different part numbers for the 05 manifolds. The tech then checked and saw a footnote stating that the headers were not compatible with VVTi motors. He swore up and down that he thought 05 Tundra owners had already been using the same headers listed for 00-04 Tundras and Sequoias.
I'd really like to put a set of JBA ceramic coated headers on my 2005 Sequoia. So right now I'd like to verify if there are any 2005 Tundra or Sequoia owners out there right now who are running aftermarket headers? If not, could some of our Toyota mechanics chime in here and tell us if there is any extra plumbing or additional reasons why headers won't work on the VVTi motor? Thanks for any input.

When I looked under the hood of an 05 Tundra, I noticed air injection tubes on the top side of the exhaust mainifolds. If so, this most likely will require a different header than previous models.
I've been in contact with an R&D guy from JBA in regards to a header application for 2005 V8s. I live about 10 minutes from their facility and stopped in there recently to inquire about letting them use my upcoming (late Jan. early Feb.) '05 D-CAB for header fitment and dyno testing. They took my name and number and said that they would get back to me. The guy that I talked to said that their R&D dept. is pretty busy with test vehicles, but was very interested in using my Tundra. Once I get my truck, I'm going to stop by and talk to them again. I'd like to put at least 1000 miles on it before I let them run through the entire RPM range on the dyno. So, hopefully there will be some headers for the '05 V8s soon. I'll keep everyone posted on what happens or if it even happens at all.

Well I got home last night and decided to dig around a little in the engine compartment. I noticed a second heat shield tucked up really tight against the block. I took a little different angle and saw the air injection tubes. They are actually really hard to see if you just casually look down at the manifolds. There are also two silver tubes running from the back of the engine which must supply the air. I guess there won't be any headers for the '05 Tundras or Sequoias very soon. Hopefully JBA will have enough interest to make a set for the 05 and up. Does anyone know if header companies will even mess with headers on a vehicle that has air injection plumbed into the manifolds??

Header manufacturers have been making retrofitted headers to accomodate air injection for years. Its just a matter of time before a set is made for the 05s.

These are the same part number as the 2004. A few months ago, trying to look up a 2005 Tundra 4.7L resulted in no links, so I'm not sure if their webpage is right or not.
Good golly. Are these things really between $800 and $1100?

hey Chris,
For brand new models some shops will try to sell at high price...I've gotten mine for $510 the jba titanium ceramic but of course they were for my 2003 Tundra....keep looking around and one day you'll find the headers with lowest price...

Air Injection...will require a different header SKU for '05s

Literally what it says...a system of an air pump and tubing to each manifold/header pipe to inject air (oxygen) just downstream of the exhaust valves. It's done (usually on engines with lots of valve overlap) to minimize the amount of unburned fuel that goes down the exhaust pipe. That unburned fuel plays havoc with the emissions numbers and can cause overheating of the catalytic converters. Injecting air into the manifold where the gasses are still very hot burns the extra fuel there.
Apparently the '05s variable valve timing has enough overlap at high RPM that air injection became necessary to meet emissions requirements. And because the '05 engine does have air injection, I'm really really doubtful that any header for the '04 and earlier engine is going to work on the new engine. Be very suspicious of any retailer who lists the same header part number/SKU for '05s that they list for '04s and earlier.

I was just surfing around on JBA's and found the part number's for the 2005 Tundra and Sequoia headers. The 2005 header part numbers are listed as follows:
The S, SJS, and SJT represent the different finishes available stainless steel, silver ceramic, and titanium ceramic. Put me down for a titanium ceramic coated set
