Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Rough starts on 05 Tundras", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have owned my 05 DC Tundra (w/TRD, tow package) for about 2 months now and twice during that time my truck failed to start on the first attempt. Under the automatic start it runs about 20 second and fails to start. I try it again and then it starts but after about another 10 seconds of trying. Has anyone else experienced this or heard of any possible problems with the Tundras?

Have only had mine a month but haven't had this issue - hope i don't, mine always starts within 2-3 seconds. Have you discussed it with your dealer yet?

No, I have not gone to the dealer yet. Today was the second time it happened, and the first time was about a month ago and I blew it off as a fluke. Mine normally starts up right away as well.
On the 05 models you only need to turn the key to the start position and release the key and the truck will continue to attempt to start for up to 20 or 30 seconds on its own. You also can turn the key and hold it until it start or until it shut off and you have to turn the key again. I have been able to turn the key to the start position and then reach into my glove box before the truck even starts running.

My 05 has done 2 weird starts. Usually it starts right away but once when it was only a few days old it took about 5 seconds to start. ( the auto start explains why the starter kept running even after I let go of the key). Yesterday it also took longer to start and when it did fire it seemed to kind of chug a lug, then it ran fine. Never has stalled though.
I"ve had my 05 Tundra since November...had 2 of those strange starts where the starter kept turning......The service guys aid the starter was designed to keep running til the engine started....
My '00 Tundra has done this about five times in five years. Never failed to start on the second attempt. My guess is that it is caused by a little air pocket in the fuel line/system or possibly the CPU is looking for a oil pressure signal before turning the ignition on.
I've had my Tundra for about two months now and it has never failed to start. It's been down to the single digits and it fired right up. My 2000 I traded in did that a couple of times while I owned it. Beats the hell out of my first car that you had to manually choke to get started. No computers or automatic chokes on that carburator.
Two month thoughts on my 05' DC... LOVE IT!

I have had 3 hard starts on my 05 TRD AC in 3 months. Twice the autostart took over and started the engine in about 10-15 seconds. First I thought
it was the cheap 87 octane 'no name' fuel I was using, but I'm not sure.
I've had a few hard starts as well when it's been near zero. I've found that if I leave the key in the "on" position for a few seconds and then crank the engine it turns right over. Maybe the fuel pump becomes pressurized during that time? Since I have the "heavy duty" starter that can't be the culprit.

I think you guys with the '05 Tundras are having the same thing as all the earlier Tundras also had. I have no idea what the cause of it is. My '01 has done it probably at most 4 times since I got it over 4 years ago. It will turn over like normal but fail to "catch". It always started on the second attempt though. The only problem with it is when it does do it, it is the worst possible time for it to fail to start, such as in a parking lot with people nearby, giving somebody a test drive, etc. rooster990
Have to agree with those who say it's a normal V8 Tundra thing. I have 22K on my 04 Access Cab. The weird start (turning for a long time - sometimes sounding like it's running while starting - sometimes sounding like its trying to run on 4 cyl. etc...) has happened to me about 5 times over the past year. It ALWAYS fires right up on the second attempt. It's happened when it's 100 degrees outside, and it's happened when it's 15 degrees.
I'm really not all that concerned with it. I know of two other local Tundra owners who have experienced the same. Still, it's weird that a Toyota would do this.
I have experienced the exact same thing as others in this thread. Does not kick over on first attempt but then fires on second attempt after struggling a bit. It also happended to my AC that I had before I traded it for the DC. I am just concerned because the truck is only a week old and it has done it twice, once the second day and again this morning. I also did not know about the 'autostart' it kind of freaked me out. I am wondering why they would come up with an autostart unless they already know about hard start issues.
