Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Redline on the V6", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Does anyone know what the redline is on the V6 / 5 speed? I am dissapointed that Toyota doesn't include a tach with any manual tranny. Also has anyone installed a tach in a Tundra and could give me some pointers. So far other than the VERY expensive shop manuals at Toyota I have been unable to locate any aftermarket shop manuals for the 2002 Tundras.
Other than that, I am enjoying my new truck!
Thanks to everyone for this site and all of the great information.
Hi Chris, yes the access cabs are set up different then the regular cabs. I have a very basic truck for work. The point I was making was I think all trucks with manual transmissions should have a tachometers. Anyway, can you tell me what the redline is on your truck?
becareful... this probably isn't your intention at all, but the engine has no rev limiter, or if it does, it has it at a higer rpm about three times since I've had my truck, I have blown past redline to almost 6000 rpm... didn't want to do this, just wasn't paying attention... $.02

I'm not sure about the RL in first, but in second, my gears are in sync with the speed, ie at 40 - 4000 and 50 - 5000... and for third gear, 70 is like 4500... you should pull fine shifting at 3000... look at your owners manual!!! it tells you when to shift gears!

Your V6 will stop pulling and making power before the redline, when you feel this its time to shift.. regardless of redline, numbers etc. I have a Taco and a tach.. when I got it, it would only pull to about 48-4900 .. after the mods I've done it will actually pull too about 50-5100 now.. after that the torque curve stops dropping and you will actually not go as fast. I have had mine to around 5600-6000 (even though three is a rev limiter... it will still swing higher) doing damn burnoffs and such I have gone a lil too high ...ooops
In my tacoma..as a reference...the v6 with tach IMO is off...the redline in my 2000 is about 5300 or so on the tach..where it turns to red dashes..i am assuming thats redline....
my super-afc has a digital tach and is tapped into the ecu and i believe that measurement of rpms way more than i would my analog stock tach... so anyway.....
one day when doing 1st to 2nd hard shifts i bounced off my rev limiter.....accidentally of course..LOL.....when i checked my AFC the highest recorded rpm was 5736....so that leads me to believe that the analog one is way off and the rev limited is higher than we think..since this redline folly....subsequent redline bouncing has confirmed the height of the rev limiter....
another good but destructive experience i have had is....one day while racing an IS-300...i was in 3rd gear at about 80mph and went to shift hard into 4th..well....i missed fourth and went into second...thats not good...for a split half second...my tach went way into the 7k range...my rear tires squealed so bad....i was pitched forward hard...sooooooo,.,,,,
the motors will go high in the rpm range....but the rev limiter can only be so fast,....
so my assumption is that the v6 has a rev limited rpm of about 5700
