Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Flowmaster 40 vs Flowmaster 50", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I did a search and found so many results on Flowmaster it was hard to find what I was looking for me. I have a new-to-me 2000 Toyota Tundra v8 4x4. I put a Flowmaster 40 exhaust with duals on a few weeks ago with the help of a friend. I like the sound... MOSTLY... however, its drones quite badly around 2000 rmps inside the vehicle, and I want to so to something with a mellower tone. I've heard that if I switched to a Flowmaster 50 that it would help quite a bit, and by the charts Flowmaster has on their site, it seems to be accurate.
Can anyone provide any first hand experience? Or even better, how about a recording of your Flowmaster 50 on your truck!?!?! (ok, thats a little hopeful)
I've got a 50 on my 04 DC and I think it's just right. I had 40 on my Mustang and had the drone as well so I know what you're talking about. Just a warning though, the 50 doesn't sound nearly as good as the 40. It is definitely mellower, yet enough to know there's a V8 rumble there.
I've had a flowmaster 50 on for 1.5 years. A single ... direct replacement for the stock muffler. I usually drive with no passengers so I have the music on - loud. The other day my wife was with me and the radio was off. There IS a distinctive drone at highway speeds.
If I was to swap out mufflers again I would be looking at some of those suggested on this site besides FM.

Thanks for the information guys. I'm going to switch to the delta flow 50 and see how that goes. A local shop can switch it out for 150 including the part. I figure I can probably get 50 or 60 bucks for the 40 on ebay.
I put a 50 series delta flow on my 04 tundra (after owning many other brands on three different tundras) and am happy with the result. It did have very MILD drone at 2k rpm. Then I cut the tailpipe off right after it dumps behind the axle. (I personally don't like the look of exhaust tips, looks cleaner this way to me). After it was cut, drone was eliminated 100%. No interior exhaust noise, but sounds even slightly throatier outside. I had similar result from a gibson system, which was extremely obnoxious inside.

what other exhausts did you own..and what models were they so we know..
I have owned a 40 flow on an 02 AC, sounded good on that vehicle, but droned and was a little too loud on long trips. A gibson single swept side cat back on a different 02 AC. Horrible drone inside from about 1700-2300 rpm. Did get quieter when was cut. It did not sound like a V8. Dead silent outside. Drove me insane. I threw the complete SS system in the trash. (Ironically, I had a Silverado with a gibson catback with great results, lots of torque and mpg gains, so I am not slamming gibson, just didn't like the result on the tundra). Installed flowmaster cat back on that same 02 AC. Sounded awesome, drone was there, but minimal. The dual setup lost some torque, unfortunately enough to notice. Replaced the stock muffler with a ss 50 series delta on my current 04 DC, cut the tip and couldn't be happier. Buddies have spintechs on their tundras, all sound and perform well. And a neighbor with a magnaflow on a tundra that sounds great!
I have a 2000 as well. Same problem only worse after I installed S&S racing headers with empty cats. I changed to the 50 series and was really happy with the change. It still scares people, but does not annoy me, perfect...
I put flanges on both sides of the exhaust, so I could put the 40 back for racing, which scares me! It gets better. I upgraded the throttle body, put a volant intake on and just upgraded my computer with Jet Performance and cannot believe the monster they created. Its downright scary. Ive never been so thrilled with driving. Good Luck!
Simply put... 40's are LOUD!! Just ask HockeyFreak. He's got 2 40's on his '01 set up as "true duals"! Sounds awesome "outside" the truck, but as I understand it, it's a MUCH more different story on the inside!
Matter of fact, the first time I met him, he had the entire interior of his truck out, putting in a product called BrownBread [similar to the dynamat material] to help with curtailing some of that loud sound filtering into the cab.
I think his wife, helped him make that decision...
