What's the difference besides ones carb, and other's f/i? I'm talking hp, tq, compression, iron or alum head, durability, gas mileage, strength, and their capabilities for higher and safer hp and tq #'s. Thanks.
As far a "durability" goes... the 22R was virtually... INDISTRUCTABLE! I had an old '82 Yoda, with 33x12.50 and 6 inches of suspension lift!! 4 ranchos up front a 2 in the rear for a total of 6 shocks! The rear springs were actually recurved and it rode, WORSE THAN a tank! Oh... my achin' back! IMHO, those 33's were way to big for that little motor, but she'd haul 'em anyway. It took a while to get up to speed, but once there, she'd roll right along!
After some 100K+ miles, and several other problems beginning to show, I decided it was time to "rebuild" the engine. Had a buddy of mine do the work, who did engine work on the side, since we both worked in the same office and I could have him give me up-dates, as progress went along. After the initial tear down, he brought in a piece of the #3 pision skirt, that was a big as the palm of his hand, which he said he found in the bottom of the oil pan!! The damnedest part is, there's NO TELLING how long, I'd been running the truck with that much engine wear/damage!! Yet, I "drove" the truck 30+ miles to the shop in his back yard!! Not to mention, it was my daily commuter, for a 60 mile round trip!!
It was one TOUGH little engine... STILL IS , even though I personally, don't own the old turck anymore!

My dad had 2 toyota trucks one was a ugly white 84 truck with over 190k on miles and he then traded to a 1988 toyota truck with the 22r with 4 speed I sort of liked that truck allthought it had some chessy rubber leather like seat's it had a great engine and ran flawlessly esp for me learning a stick yea my first truck to ride in..The 22r is a great engine and it had a lot of power not to mention the engine has a timing chain vs my tundrav8 rubber timing belt and very pricey repair every 5 year's (90k service)..Toyota 22r was an easy truck to work on I dont recall that truck having head gasket problems like the new v6 truck that came out year's later on but i may be wrong on that who know's

I've had both engines. 1981 2 wheel drive pickup with 22R and 1988 extra cab 4x4 with 22 RE. Engines were pretty much the same other than the RE being fuel injected. The 1988 RE was rated at 116 HP and can't recall exactly about the older R version but I thought it was about 105 HP. Also there was a head and block change too. Both were tough, reliable, bulletproof engines that lasted a LONG time. About the only problem they were prone to was headgasket leaks due to the aluminum head and cast iron block they would expand and contract at different rates causing headgasket failure. I replaced headgaskets on both engines. Other than that, great engines.
What year did they quit making the 20R? I think it was 1980. It had a better head or intake design than the 22R and had better power IMO. I remember reading somthing about how the flow was less restrictive on the 20R. I had a 1980 Celica 22r, 1983 Celica GTS 22RE, 1983 4x4 pickup 22r, 1986 4x4 xtra cab 22r, 1987 4x4 pickup 22RE, 1994 4x4 xtra cab v6, and now the v8 Tundra.
The two are closely related, but not identical. I've had and rebuilt both, and recommend the 22re. The EFI is a wonderful thing especially in the cold. For power, in stock form, the two are comparable. The 20r is relable and well built but down on power due to limited displacement.
The heads and castings are similar. The deck heights, pistons, timing sets and cams are different. The 22r can be built up for more power due to the aftermarket options and EFI control limitations on the 22re.
From longevity and reliability go with the 22re. It's the same basic design that is offered in the current 4 cylinder trucks.
