Default Changing the oil

Hey all,
I was wondering if there is a how-to or diagram for changing the oil on my 2002 Tundra extended cab?
Any tips? What oil, its the 10,000 mile mark..

Thanks
PB

Default use Amsoil Synthetic oil

Use Amsoil Series 2000 0w30 synthetic oil. It's the best oil for long drainage periods, 35K miles or one year. Don't forget your auto transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and differential(s).

If you want to know more, give me a yell at

There are How-To's in the subscribing members area but you can't access them as a registered member. It's easy though, use a 12mm socket to remove the bolts holding the skid plate in place then you have access to the oil filter and you'll see the oil drain plug. I forgot what size that is though to be honest. Reverse the procedure and you're done. The whole job totals about 15 minutes if the pan drains quickly.

As for oil, I use Mobil 1 synthetic. It's relatively cheap and I can run 5K mile drain intervals safely. I run oil analysis once a year to see what's in my oil and it's been normal for those runs. AMSOIL is good too but I think it's a bit more money but I don't run long intervals like 10K+ miles between changes.

I thought it was 10mm that held the skid plate in place???

I just got through taking my inside apart to clean in/around a/c vents and guages, so I might just have screws and 10mm on the brain.

It might be, I don't change my oil for another 1500 miles so I'll know for sure then I think I have 12mm on my brain because I changed out my entire grille assembly and filler panels and that was all 12mm.

12 mm for the skid plate bolts. 14 mm for the oil pan plug.

-Have on hand 7 quarts of your choice of oil...for 10k, maybe the new extended drain interval Mobil 1, 10W-30 in mild or hot weather and 5W-30 for cold,
-new filter, OEM, WIX or NAPA/Gold, Purolator or Pure One, Baldwin or Hastings,
-new aluminum gasket for the drain plug,
-12mm, 14mm, & oil filter wrench.

Drive to get the oil thoroughly warm, maybe 30 minutes.
Park on a level spot and set the parking brake.
Remove the skid pan.
Put a drain pan under the oil drain plug.
Remove the oil drain plug. Be sure you remove the old gasket
When reduced to an occaisonal drop, renew the aluminum gasket and replace the drain plug. Tighen to 35 ft-lbs (firm but don't strip the threads).
Put the drain pan under the filter & remove it. Wipe the threads and gasket face clean, wipe new oil on the filter gasket, (maybe fill the filter with new oil), reinstall hard hand tight. Be sure you did not leave the old rubber gasket sticking to the engine. The filter will tell how much to tighten.
Replace the skid pan...hand the pan by the front hooks and put in one rear bolt. Put in all the bolts loosely, get everything lined up, then tighten all the bolts firmly. Don't start them crooked (cross threaded) and strip the threads.
Fill the engine with 6-1/2 or 7 quarts of oil, total, look everything over, start the engine, look for leaks.
Clean up your mess, recycle the oil, and you're done.

My 2002 doesn't have a washer for the drain plug. Thirty minutes seems like too much time to just warm up the oil. Within thirty minutes the oil could burn you seriously if you attempt to drain it hot. My opinion though.

Yep, it's got a gasket. If it doesn't, it should. If you think there is a raised area on the pan where the head of the drain plug contacts...that's the stuck-on gasket.

Hot oil drains good and drains out more of the contaminants. Yes, it could be hot enough to burn if the weather is really hot and if the oil is allowed to stay on the skin, but I've gotten lots of hot crankcase oil on my hands with no problems...just let it run off and wipe the rest off.
