Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "30,000 Mile Service", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My local dealer quoted me 444.00 for the 30k mile service, this seems a bit high being that most items are "check this and check that". Can anyone provide me information on what there dealer charged them for this service. Looking for a dealer in the LA (San Fernando Valley) area as I travel there quite often.
I got a recent mailer from Claremont Toyota (Inland Empire). They advertise $259.95 plus tax for the 30k service, but the fine print says that V8's, Platimum & Iridium plugs higher. SFV dealerships should have similar pricing.
What I've found is this.... The dealerships I've seen pricing for are $400-500 for the 30K service. Also, what each dealership does for their 30K service will vary not only btwn dealerships but also from what toyota recommends(to a certain extent). Actually, dealerships usually error on the side of caution not only to protect their repution but also to make more money.
I do most of my own maintenance but for someone who doesn't, figure it this way(especially if your gonna keep the vehicle for a long time)... if you spend an extra $2K over ten years on regular maintenance, it's better than spending much, much more for repairs and/or a new vehicle.
Carson Toyota will do it for $125 or something (ask them). I told that to Manhattan Beach Toyota and they matched Carson's price. Their normal price on it was $279.
I just got a quote for the 30000 mile service from Toyota West, Statesville, NC at $404.95. This includes oil and filter change, tire rotation, replace air conditioner filter, replace air filter, replace engine coolant, replace plugs [no designation as to which ones], replace auto trans fluid, replace gasket [oil pan?], clean rear brakes, fuel injector service, lube hinges and locks, check battery and alternator charging, and 19 point inspection.
I tow a 5000 pound fifth wheel with this vehicle and it is used almost exclusively for towing.
Is this price for these items reasonable? Any additional items that should be performed? Any items that could be omitted?

Thanks for any comments!!!!
The plugs will be stock; that's the only kind on the parts shelf.
--There's no air conditioner filter in the Tundra,
--the coolant needs to be flushed and replaced every two years so 30k is OK,
--there's no gasket that needs replacement that I know of
--clean rear brakes-sounds like a gimmick to boost profits
--fuel injector service-what do they do? More profit boost
--lube stuff-big deal. Get yourself an oil can
--check battery-I'd know if it's working or not, so would you
--19 point inspection-lights, horn, wipers,-you can do all this. Do have all four brakes inspected.
--for excellent injector cleaning, use Avlube's Primrose Injector Perfector http://www.avlube.com/automotive.htm Install one of the super magnet oil pan plugs at your next oil change, too.
--With all that towing, you need a complete transmission flush and change. Figure $80 to $140. Synthetic ATF works very well for heavily loaded transmissions. Use it. Mobil 1, Amsoil, Red Line are all good. I'd also recommend synthetic gear oil in the differentials and transfer case.
--$409 is too much unless it includes the complete 15 qt. tranmission flush, which it probably doesn't.
--You do not need to get any maintenance performed at a dealer. Check quality independent shops. Bring your owner's manual with the list of work needed. The only work you need to have done at a dealer is warranty repairs that Toyota pays for.
Here in Phx. I paid $270. I had the dealer do it. My time is money and it is well worth the dealer to have the truck for a couple hours rather than me doing it and it taking 4 - 5 hours. I have done this service on my other vehicles and it is well worth the $270.
Plus I was able to talk to the serv. tech about having the brakes replaced, which I also had done recently.
If you have a rack at your disposal the atf, tire rotation, undercarriage check is easy but if you have to roll around on a creeper then you can spend alot of time under your truck.
Some shops charge the big bucks for a transmission flush and don't even have the flushing machine. The extend the transmission cooler line into a bucket, start the engine, pump the ATF out at the same time they pour new ATF down the filler tube. If the can't get the new stuff in fast enough, they just pinch-off the hose with vise-grips. I wouldn't do it this way....
The only Toyota dealer within 100 miles of my house quoted my $400+ for the 30,000 mile service. I can't remember what was significant, but I remember him telling me there was something I wouldn't want to do myself or didn't have the parts or something. I thought it was re-torquing something that wasn't easy to get to or something. I'm gonna have to check the manual, as I should turn 30,000 in the next month or so.
If I do it myself and just write it down with my oil change receipts, that should be sufficient to preserve the warranty, right?
I just had my 30 K service done in Big Two Toyota in Mesa. Cost $291.44. They changed oil and air filter, antifreeze, trans fluid, and Denso K20R-U spark plugs. Also had "quick Lube". I drank their coffee and looked at new Toyota's. No pollution disposal problems - No dirty clothes - no tools - no sweat in 100 degree days. The service rep George goes a great job!

For all of you AZ People - there's a great shop in Tempe called Rick Hall's Auto Dr. It's on Warner and Hardy behind FuddRuckers. The guy I use to deal with is Dale and the guy is awesome. I trust him more than the local dealers. Just an FYI.
AZ TUNDRA - Do you forecast schedules for a Call Center?
