Default Funky Idle

The truck has 73,000 miles on it.

Everytime I roll from a stop(feathering the gas) The truck feels like it's going to stall(shaky with a slight loss of power). This only happens every once in a while and when it happens, it only does it for a second. The idle also sounds off like it's not "in beat."

I've cleaned the TB.

I also installed a transmission cooler/temp gauge/filter and also running synthetic ATF, to be safe.

Running synthetic Mobil 1 that has been changed every 3000 miles. And I use fuel injection cleaner every 3000 miles.

Can't seem to figure it out. Help?

Chris

PCV Valve? - could be stuck open, you do have enough miles for this to happen. See page EC-4 in Vol 2 of the factory manual for details / service / replacement.

It would have to be the PCV valve.. I remember when my '91 Pontiac Bonneville would surge up and down a lot like it wouldn't find a proper idle. Took it to the GM dealer - said it was the PCV Valve and had them replace it.

Sanosuke!

I was having a very similar problem with my 2001 Tundra with 45k miles. As I rolled from a stop I would get some hesitation, then again at about 25-30 mph I would get a pulsing effect. I replaced all sorts of things trying to find the problem. Turns out it was my in-line fuel filter. The thing was so gunked up with deposits I don't know how she was running at all. The filter is located on the drivers side under the bed of the truck. About midway from my back tire to the door of the truck. I picked one up at Auto zone for about $14.00. Says on the package that it recomends a change every 10,000 miles. My truck has never run better since.

Indeed, if the under body fuel filter is VERY dirty you will also want to address the secondary fuel filter - up under the intake manifold (nasty) - but it's NOT supposed to get dirty (sure)

Thanks for the responses. I'll check on the in line fuel filter. And I'll be sure to check the PCV too, it's funny because right before I was read this, I was replacing the PCV hoses on my '82 Volvo.

Sent you a PM as well . . .

From the source:

1 Yes, there are two filters, in "Toyota Speak" - the first is the main filter, on the frame. The second is the filter screen on the fuel pump in the tank. Toyota Parts calls this a filter as well. (just got back from the dealer confirming all of this).

2 The confusion over the location of the "second" filter comes from the parts schematic - the frame filter w/PN is illustrated RIGHT NEXT to the intake manifold on the schematic - confirmed today at dealer. I ASSUMED the second filter location from a previous discussion at dealer. My fault for speed reading the schematic over the parts person's shoulder last trip in . . . bad habit you pick up in the computer consulting business (trust no one, confirm all details ASAP - including speed reading upside down and backwards!)

My apologies to all whose lives have been irrevocably damaged by this scandalous error ;-)

Yeah, update on my truck's symptoms. Funky idle and loss of power upon acceleration so far.

Well, add one "check engine light" to that.

I just changed the fuel filter and pcv valve today, so we'll see if those were the culprits.

Still a funky idle. Whenever I touch on the gas lightly, the truck feels like its going to die.

I can't figure out what it is. Dirty MAF? Fuel pump?

What was the code for your check engine light? The symptoms are sounding like one or both of your oxygen sensors are failing.

I had the same symptoms in an 01 a couple of years ago. It was still under warranty, and if I recall correctly, the dealer replaced on O2 sensor. It ran fine afterwards. Good luck.

autozone can get the code for free, get it ASAP before it goes away! if whatever it is goes away suddenly, or is borderline, two consecutive starts without the error will erase the code. read it now, post up and someone will decode it for you.
