Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "super charger, is it worth it (Tacoma)", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have a 2004 double cab tacoma and I have been thinking about installing the super charger which doesn't come cheap plus installation. My question is for those who have it, is it worth the expense? Can you really feel the difference and where is it more noticeable the most, when taking off or when accelerating to pass another vehicle, for example.
I would like any feedback so I can make an informed decision.
you will need the urd kit or 7th injector after, but, hell yes it is worth it. dont you want to smoke the tires all the way through 2nd? fun, but also great passing power.

Thanks.
I have a 1999 4runner 4wd (same engine as your Tacoma) with the supercharger and a 2004 double cab tacoma 4wd without the supercharger. The power difference is quite noticeable, especially in the 2000-4500 rpm zone. For my type of driving the supercharger is great when passing vehicles on the highway, when towing my boat, or driving up severe inclines at high elevation (Mauna Kea). It does not help me when traveling off-road in 4wd.
The key question, is it worth the expense? For me no, which is why I do not have a supercharger on my Tacoma. The cost of the unit is only the beginning. You will need to upgrade your fuel delivery with either the TRD seventh injector or the URD kit. Super/92 octane gasoline is a must and the life of your motor will probably be shortened as well. Beefing up your automatic transmission is also recommended. Good luck.
