Default Anyone switching to full synthetic oil?

My truck is fast approaching the 3K mile marker. I was wondering how many people out there are running fully synthetic oil, like Mobil 1. I was thinking about making the switch.

If so what weight oil are you using???

First oil change (4.0 V6) 500 miles. Put in Dino oil.
Second change, (just drain/fill) 1000 miles.

Full synthetic, Mobil 1 5-30 at 1500 miles.

I was semi aggressive with the break in, no oil consumption at all.

Original dino oil just went out, Castrol Syntech semi-syn went in. You guys running full syn, notice any mpg increase?

I think about a 3-5% fuel savings is possible, and there are too many other variables for it to be noticed.

I don't think any of the usual synthetic blends are worth the price they ask. There isn't enough synthetic in it to do much good and the benefits aren't noticeable on used oil analysis.

A co-worker of mine who is a master mechanic told me this. He said that you should use regular oil for at least 10,000 miles then switch to full synthetic. He said that if you break down the oil in the microscopic state, regular oil has different size oil molecules that will fill in the microscopic ridges and craters within the engine coating it. synthetic oil is man made, therefore the oil molecules are exactly the same size so they won't fill in all the craters and ridges. But once it has been coated with regular oil, synthetic works very well. Once again this is what was told to me, and it makes sense to me. I'm sure someone will tell me how wrong this is and laugh at me.

Well that's good news to me! I love synthetic oil and would prefer to be running with it.

But the dealership gave me coupons for 8 free oil/oil filter changes with my 05 Taco and I was debating whether or not to just bring in my own Mobile 1 for them or let it go with dino oil for 24,000 miles!

I think I'll just go with dino until the 12,000 mile point and starting bringing in my own Mobile 1 for them!

Thanks!

Boo

Well, the first part *is* true. Synthetic has similiar sized molecules. And regular oil is all over the map. But filling in the craters and ridges - well, that's a new one on me......

Hey, we'd only laugh *with* you, not at you!

Unhappy From Synthetic back to Dino oil

My son purchased his first "new" car the past summer, a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, supercharged, etc. At the first oil change at the dealer he had synthetic oil put in the and they charged him $40.00. He recently told me that he had free oil changes for the life of the car if he used regular oil. I feel the $40.00 is really steep and told him so. I asked him why, if he had free oil changes with the dino oil why should he spend $40 for synthetic. He agreed and wonders if he could switch back to dino oil without hurting the engine. The car has 5k miles on it and runs perfectly. Does a superchaged car hold up better with synthetic?

From all the stats I've seen, nothing beats 100% synthetic oil. But, on the other hand, studies have shown that people who do frequent (3,000) mile oil changes, whether syn or dino, have had better luck in the long haul with their engines.

$40 is RIDICULOUS! Just stop into Wal-Mart on the next trip and buy a 5 Qt jug for $22 and give it to them. (Or 6 Qt if the car takes more than 5) They shouldn't fuss about it.

Gosh, I wonder if they'd let you take the car in every 2,000 miles, if it's free?

I run syn in all my vehicles (4) and have zero engine problems and the oil doesn't even look all that dirty at 3,000 miles when I change it.

Good luck!

Boo

No problems switching from conventional oil to synthetic to conventional to synthetic, etc.

3000 mile oil changes are a very good idea...for the oil companies' profits. Modern oils live much longer. If he sticks with synthetic, and he might as well supply his own, he can easily go the full interval shown in his owner's manual or GM Oil Life Monitor system.
