Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Secondary Fuel Filter", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I was recently discussing my under the body fuel filter on my 2001 6cyl tundra and how gunked up that is was when I changed it. I was told by another member that there was yet another filter down line, a secondary fuel filter located under the intake manifold. I cannot seem to locate this secondary fuel filter, can anyone help me find it?

Did you replace this yourself? if so how hard was it to do?

about the fuel filter under the bed of the truck on the driver’s side, yes I did change it my self. It was very easy to do. Just know that the line is under pressure. What I did was loosen the fitting on the outlet side just enough to get a steady drip of fuel and slowly continued loosening the fitting until it was completely off. I am sure there is a better way to relieve the pressure but thats how I did it. Oh, and do not loosen the strap bracket that holds the filter to the bed of the truck until after you have the lines disconnected, this helps hold the filter in place while you put the wrenches on it.

Was your "friend" smirking when he told you this?
I've never heard of any vehicle having a "secondary" fuel filter! Oh yea, it's right next to the secondary air filter!
From the source:
1 Yes, there are two filters, in "Toyota Speak" - the first is the main filter, on the frame. The second is the filter screen on the fuel pump in the tank. Toyota Parts calls this a filter as well. (just got back from the dealer confirming all of this).
2 The confusion over the location of the "second" filter comes from the parts schematic - the frame filter w/PN is illustrated RIGHT NEXT to the intake manifold on the schematic - confirmed today at dealer. I ASSUMED the second filter location from a previous discussion at dealer. My fault for speed reading the schematic over the parts person's shoulder last trip in . . . bad habit you pick up in the computer consulting business (trust no one, confirm all details ASAP - including speed reading upside down and backwards!)
My apologies to all whose lives have been irrevocably damaged by this scandalous error ;-)
