Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "4.56 or 4.88 gears", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
4.88 & 35's for about a year now and no probs. with 35's I'd reccommend the 4.88 as the off the line accel is a tad better than stock. Speedo is about 10% over and I still have not installed my Dakota digital recalibration unit. I may be goin to 37's soon

4 out of 5 have said to put 4.56 gears on with 35" tires. Only one said to use 4.88 gears. What's up with that???
You know your gonna wanna go bigger .
Another thing to consider is the "true" tire size. I know the BFGs will run small if thats what you end up getting. My roomate on the other hand; he has true 37" IROKs on his Bronc, and all I have to say about that is dayum!
I plan on running 4.88's on mine once I get all these parts put on!!! I may run the stockers until I get the 35's put on.

Don't tempt the temptible, that's just rude...
I haven't come to a firm tire yet, I know my sig reads different, but I may run a Goodyear MTR or a BFG m/t or the Swamper Truxus M/T. I don't know yet. Decisions Decisions, they are a killer.

According the the calculator I used on ringpinion.com, 4.56 and 35" tires will make the engine turn slightly faster than stock. 4.88 will make it turn even faster. Higher engine rpms for the same road speed puts a lighter load on the whole drivetrain from engine to differential input.
hp = tq x rpm ÷ 5252. If hp stays the same (truck keeps moving at the same speed, same road grade) and rpms increase, then actual torque developed goes down. Torque is the twisting force trying to twist your transmission, etc., into prezels.

4.88 gears with 34.8" tire at 60mph 3rd gear auto tranny rpm 2903 O/D gear 1979 rpm
4.56 gears with 34.8" tire at 60mph 3rd gear auto tranny rpm 2712 O/D gear 1849 rpm
3.90 gears with 30.5" tire at 60mph 3rd gear auto tranny rpm 2647 O/D gear 1804 rpm
3.90 gears with 29.5" tire at 60mph 3rd gear auto tranny rpm 2737 O/D gear 1866
The 34.8" tire is a 35 x 12.50 x 17 OR a 315/75/16
The 30.5" tire is a 265/70/16 (upgraded size for TRD package)
The 29.5" tire is a 245/70/16 (this is the stock tire size for the Tundra)
I think the biggest point to remind people is that this gear ratio is based on the height of the tire alone, this does not include the fact that there is about 2-3" difference in the width of the tire differences and the additional weight that is carried with that width.
THEREFORE, I have made the decision to go with the 4.88 gears for my 35" tires with an "attempt at modding an" OEM electric locker from a TRD Tacoma.

the engine and tranny will really appreciate that extra 100rpm...it doesnt seem like much but it will occasionally be enough to kick the rpm up to the powerband a little quicker, which will make a lot of difference getting those tires rolling. my truck is a dog right now, ive been driving between 2k and 3k rpm as a general rule, shifting manually or giving more throttle because otherwise it shifts too low and lugs horribly.
since you have 40 bucks left over, why not go ahead and flush the tranny or hook up a spinn off tranny filter kit...

what kind of price difference are you talking about between the e locker and the ARB?
