Default Muffler sizes?

I am going to buy a stainless steal magnaflow muffler only, offset/center, with 2.5" inlet/outlet and keep the stock 2 3/8 piping like everyone recommends. My question is what size muffler do I buy. On the Magnaflow size, it has 4x9, 5x8, and 5x11 mufflers. What do these sizes mean besides how big they are and price (loudness, performance, etc) and do I have to buy a muffler that is the same size as the stock muffler?

The bigger the muff, the quieter it is. A Magnaflow is straight through. Theres no power difference in the sizes.

You can buy as large a muff that will fit, or a smaller one and make up the difference in size with tubing.

Thank you! Does anyone know if the 4x9's are too loud (flowmaster loud)? I want something that is quiet at idle so when I warm up the truck in the morning I don't disturb the neighbors, but loud when I mash the peddle. If it's too loud then would the 5x8's be a better option? (Or 5x11?)

i have the 4" X 9" oval that is 14" long. it was not as loud as i expected at all. it is defenitely not even as close to as loud as a flowmaster at all. it has a nice mellow burble at idle and IMO perfectly loud as u get on it (2000 - 3500 RPM )and it even quiets down as the RPMs get higher then that and no drone at all. people defenitely know i have a V8, but it is not deafening or annoying load whatsoever. if i had to do it over, i would have gotten the same muffler.

My Magnaflow SS cat-back on the Sequoia has the 5x11x22 oval and it has nice low rumble with the Magnaflow resonator.

The 22" Magnaflow is very quiet. If you want loud under full load, get a smaller model Magnaflow.
