Default First Oil Change (05 Tacoma)

Ok well I did my first oil change on my Taco to put in the Mobil 1. First let me say...that d!$%* oil filter was tight! I tried my al my filter wrenches to include the kind that you use the ratchet in the end. Nada. Finally had to resort to the ole screw driver punch through. After 3 different angles, I finally got a good enough angle to get enough leverage. So after all that drama, the filter off, the oil draining. I start thinking to mysef... "there was not a gasket on the drain plug" I thought that was a little odd.

So now that I've drawn this story out as long a possible . For anyone else that has changed their oil, was there a gasket on the drain plug? Thanks!

Wish I could help but I took mine into the dealer since I have the extended tire program that requires a tire rotation by Toyota every 5K miles. So I did the oil change and rotation at the same time, somehow it was amazingly cheap too.

No gasket on mine either, also no gasket on my camry. Don't worry about it unless you see drops of oil on the ground.

When I picked up the filters they gave me replacement washers, but there wasn't one on there when I removed the plug. Hmmmmm

Often there is a washer, but it sticks to the bottom of the pan

Yes ther is a washer it is stuck to the pan on mine I had to pry it off with screw driver. My dealer gives me new gaskets(washers) with the filters. They also give me the filters for cost if I get 10(1 box) at a time.

Default Initial Oil Change

Took 05 Tacoma in to dealership for initial oil & filter change at 2400 miles. Service receipt shows 10W30 oil was used. Oil filler cap shows to use 5W30. Anyone know which weight oil is best to use in Oklahoma climate?

At 2400 miles. Kinda early isnt it, I mean even though its a new truck. I looked on my receipt and it says they used the 5w30 and I doubt yoru climate is much different than mine in North Texas. Seems like most higher reving capable 4cyl and 6 cyl engines call for 5w30, but im sure 10w30 wouldnt hurt anything.

My preference is for the heaviest viscosity allowed by the owner's manual for the climate. 10W-30 would be my choice for your climate. The dealership likely has one bulk tank, buy the oil cheaply in bulk from a tanker truck, and use that oil for everybody. The car & truck makers are pushing lighter viscosity oil for a fraction of a mile per gallon in fuel savings to satisfy the EPA. This is the reason Ford, Honda, and Dodge are now requiring 5W-20, and Ford uses diesel 10W-30 in the newest Powerstroke diesel.

Default Help please.

Hi, my friend just bought a used 2003 Tacoma. But in his infinite wisdom, he didn't demand the owners manual when they told him they didn't have it, so now he has a dilema. He needs to change his oil, but he never got an owners manual, and despite my searching, I havn't been able to find the simple statisctic of oil capacity for a 2004 I4 tacoma. I think it's a 2.4 (says so on the inside of the hood) but I could easily be mistaken.

If anyone has this same engine, PLEASE help us out and let me know how much we need. Thanks a lot.

10w-30 will be fine. It wont hurt anything unless you live in very low temperature climates.

I always tell people to change their new car oil at 1,000 miles. Manufacturers put in a special "break in" oil from the factory to help make the engine all smooth and get all the rough edges off the parts, etc, but it's very bad to keep it in for a long period of time, especially since all the little metal filings from the pieces that the oil smoothed out are floating around in the resevoir now.

The only maker I know of that puts a special break in oil in the new engine is Honda, and there it is important to keep the oil in for the full oil chance period.

I agree, it is wise to do one or two short-mileage oil drains to remove any manufacturing dirt and metal particles from the new engine. I have a magnetic drain plug. It has been interesting seeing how the amount of steel and iron particles on the magnet has decreased as the mileage built on the engine. These are particles so small they pass through the filter, but they're still abrasive.

How much does a box of filters run you?
