Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Gas Milage", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
The topic of gas milage has been discussed many times here and I have read many accounts of the Tundra's gas milage. I had the opportunity to go to Reno from Morgan Hill yesterday. It was a quick trip for business. Taking the route from Morgan Hill over Pacheco Pass and up I5 to 80 into Reno (the Peppermill) took 4 1/2 hours, 311miles. Traffic was light untill the comute hour hit in Sacramento, after that it was clear sailing. Average gas milage,,,,17.5mpg. Average speed according to my Garmin Emap 67mph. Got about the same coming home. I don't know about you folks but I'm pretty happy about it. I don't think any other full size truck with a V-8 could do that well. Yes the Valentine one worked well but driving with the traffic is the best way to avoid a visit from your local CHP. Love the truck, enjoy!

The one time I checked mine I got 19.185!!!!
I'm scared to check it again! Besides, with the Borla's on it, I drive it a little harder! Prob'ly get about 10 now!
I admit that I was going 80mpg on the open road but averages are still just that, averages. How on earth do you coax over 19mpg from a truck with a V-8. I mean the wind resistance alone is enough to slow you down in a headwind. The best prior to this trip was 15.5. I gotta think that of Toyota thought they could extract over 19mph out of a Tundra with the addition of headers they'd of put them on as standard equipment. Well I guess I'm impressed to say the least, but it still doesn't figure. I'm not an optomist when it comes to all the add-ons that claim to increase gas milage. If all the claims were true you could add a K&N airfilter, new computer chip, exhaust, Mobile1 and get over 21 or Mph? I guessing not. The laws of physics won't allow it, not at hiway speeds anyway. I've checked almost ever tank of gas I've put in 7500 miles of driving, the old fashion way, Miles/gallons and come up short of what most people say the get on this board. I gotta wonder what the heck I'm doing wrong. I will say however that I get what the Window sticker says I'll get, so I guess I'm in the factory's window.
Checked mine the last two tanks and I got 17.2 and 16.8 mpg with a 4x2-v8-access cab with mixed highway and city driving. I’ve been driving it like a granny!
Why are so many owners concerned about gas mileage, especially the difference could be only 1 or 2 mp when gas is $1.30/gal? It can't be cost, since the major costs of ownership is the opportunity cost (loss of potential income from tying up money in the purchase of a truck) and insurance expense. Now if the MPG ptential increase goes up to 3 MPG or fuel prices rise 0.30/gal, then I get interested increasing fuel mileage.
If your concerned about the difference in 1 or 2MPG change I suggest that you break down the costs of vehicle ownerhip and operating into subcategories like lost potential income, insurace, fuel cost, mainteance, etc. I your worried about fuel costs, then maye a truck is the wrong vehicle for you- get a car with a four cyclinder like a Corrola and rent a truck when you need to use one.
I believe that the cheapest way to increase gas mileage is to increase the tire air pressure to 35psgi all the way around and keep the AC off with the windows up winter/fall/spring driving.
BTW, My two wheel trive extended cab/V8 got 19MPG on a 320 mile round trip to/ from the beach. This trip was 90% at 65MPHr, and the rest was between 15 and 50 with stop signs and lights sprinkled in. Tire pressure was 35psig on all fours, cargo weight was about 400lbs inclduing pasengers, avg. elevation change was 350 ft , ambient temperature and RH was 70/50%, no cargo cover, and I use M1 10W30 changed near July 4 and Christmas each year. Truck odometer mileage is 32K. Minimal use of power accessories and the trip was during the daytime (no lights).
Well, I go on a 2000 mile vacation in 2 wks and gas just went from $1.34 a gal to 1.64 a gal over night. Tell me they are not playing with the prices. That will cost another $42 for the trip. I only drive the truck to church on Sunday. The rest of the time its the Honda at 30mpg.
has anyone tested the mileage while pulling an RV? I did once and the mileage was 12.............just wondering what others are getting............would you keep the tires at 35 psi while towing?

I say the hell with the gas milage....12,13,14,15 whatever...its not that good, but look what a nice safe truck it is.Bigger trucks naturally use more gas,oil,anti-freeze,wax....so just be thankful that it's under 2 bucks and we can live in a country were a man can drive around without his shirt on......
