Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Finally decided on a muffler...NO muffler (now with vids)", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Well, I finally had the time to try an exhaust mod that someone posted about a while ago. I could not decide which muffler to go with, so I tried something which turned out very well. I pulled off the stock muffler and tail pipe in one piece. A local muffler shop here in the 909 fabbed up a new flange which fits right back onto the factory pipe, then bent a new 2 1/2 tailpipe which exits the same location as stock, totally eliminating the muffler all together. It definately sounds like a V8 now, probably not any louder than a 2 chamber FM, or a MF. The cool thing about this set-up is that if for what ever reason I wanted to go back to stock, I un-clamp the flange, slide off the pipe, then re-clamp the stock back in. Also, if I find this set-up is too loud, I go back, and have a muffler welded in.
The best part is this all cost $70.00. If I decide I want, say a Magnaflow later, I go back and have one welded in....no re-bending or labor charges for ANOTHER tailpipe.
I have only gone a short distance so far on the freeway, and heard no drone. I can tell the difference at 2k rpm if the truck is cruising or working.
Attached are a couple pics. There are more in my gallery. Anyone in the Inland Empire needing muffler work, I can recommend "Bob's Muffler Shop". He does great work, and is willing to 'experiment' and try different stuff like this! His # is (909)987-2088. Or email me with questions!

In Colorado Springs the police have been giving tickets to people with super-loud vehicles.
I agree with this up to a point. Some off the after-market mufflers seem to INCREASE the noise from the engine. A reasonable roar is fine but when I can hear the damn things inside my house, then it's too loud. (They even give tickets to motorcyclists, especially Hog owners, for the loud pipes.)

Looks like clean work. As far as adding a muff later......The pipe looks so close to the upper cross member, doesnt look like theres room for a muffler.

I have had friends di this to their trucks, only a little different. They cut the muffler in 2 and then remove all the baffles and everything inside and weld it back together. This way you spend no money and if a cop checks it looks completely stock. Sounds great too!

Well, the 'seat of the pants' dyno results are in and they 'feel' very good. I got an obvious improvement between 2.7k and 3.2k rpm.... Passing on the freeway is much improved.
MPG results and video to come.........

Well, here they are, two short clips of normal and hard acceleration. I un-bolted the muffler from the flange, and had a new tailpipe bent from the flange, and exiting the stock location.
Check 'em out in my photo gallery!
Louder, but nice sound and not too loud. In my opinion of course!

Sounds great. Not as loud as I was expecting either.
