Default learching back and fourth when coming to a quick stop

well when i come to a quick stop, and after i have completely stoped, the truck learches back and fourth 3 times, the engine rps slow relitive to the learching. it feels like the torque converter is slipping then catching or something. it will also do it when i have come to a complete stop inch foward a foot or so then hit the brakes again, but it only does it if i hit the brakes hard and make it come to a quick stop.
anybody got any ideas??
thanks a lot
matt

If you have an auto, check the fluid level.

Does this happen more when you make a real quick sudden stop or stop going down hill? When you go to pull off does the engine sometime rev a little bit like the tranny is in neutral and then suddenly pop into gear?

Or, does it act like stays in gear, but the engine its self surge a bit like it is having trouble idling?

it happens only when i make a quick or sudden stop, and hit the brakes rather hard.

I hope you have an auto tranny that still has a dip stick.

I had the same trouble with my 4Runner right after a tranny flush. What I found was happening was the fluid level was to low. When I stopped quickly the fluid would slosh forward and uncover the filter inlet causing a sudden pressure loss in the system.

By increasing slightly the fluid level a little at a time I was able to eliminate the problem. It appears that at least on my truck, the dip stick is not marked properly and this same thing is a fairly common problem on the 3rd Gen 4Runners, so maybe it is not just mine.

Anyway, it might be worth trying on your truck to see if it makes any difference.

I've felt something similar to this but I always figured it was the brakes that I never TSB'd.

Do your RPMS follow the truck's learching?

Chris
