Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "I Broke My Muffler Lol", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
for two days when i would be driving i would hear squeking from the exhaust. so i thought the exhaust came off the hanger. NOPE, that was fine. hmm...
btw...the squeking was getting really annoying at this point.
so finally, my exhaust stoped squeking...WOOHOOO...wrong!!! now my exhaust sounds like a farting lawnmower from jupiter. when the truck is off and get under the truck, i can shake the muffler and literally hear something moving around. maybe a weld broke inside or something, i dunno.
its not that big of a deal i got the cat back for free.
so now i am in need of a new muffler. any sugestions? ive heard the spintech is nice. what do you guys think? my exhaust no robs too much low end, so next week i am gonna buy the s&s headers and 2.5" piping and a muffler of course and weld it all up myself. think im gonna have it exit in front of the right rear tire. but who knows.
i just dont know which muffler to get. i am going to get a underdrive pulley. i have a cold air intake that i will be removing, it's too obnoxious(loud) i'll leave the noise up to zo6 i might eventually get the supercharger, sooner probably than later, so this will affect my muffler decision as well. any input would be great.

Ill say this, if you just want a muffler, I reccomend a Spintech. Do the S and S headers come with a Y pipe? If not, what id do in your case, since your doing the charger, is make a 2.5" y pipe, and then single 3" all the way back with a straight through muff. Forced induction motors do really well with straight muffs.
Let us know what you decide and how you like it.

I would go magnaflow or spintech. They seem to be the highest flow and the S&S headers will work well with a high flow muffler and 2.5" single exhaust.
It took me a couple trys to find this out, but now I know.

im gonna get a charger in the future, its not looking so near anymore so would a straight through design still be best? is spin tech a straight through design? where can i buy a spintech muffler?
thanks for all your help

the stock muffler is connected to the resonator pipe by a really goofball circle clamp and a metal gasket. if you flex the pipe enough, it'll probably bust that clamp enough that daily driving will slowly shake it loose and youll have a disconnect between the resonator and the muffler.
best solution, if youre keeping the stock exhaust pipe in that area, is use 3-bolt collector flanges to connect everything and use a section of flex pipe. works great, and youll be less likely to break things in the future when you take a hard hit.
on my truck, the stock pipe is cut just forward of the muffler, where the pipe straightens out. the flex pipe is welded there (b/c the stock pipe is 2.5" OD at that point), and a 3-bolt flange welded to the flex pipe. we cut the s&s y-pipe back an inch or so and put a 3-bolt on the end there, the whole thing ties together great now, no leaks, and enough give that im not stressing the headers nearly as much if i tag the tailpipe on a rock. make sure to hang the flanges from the pipe on the truck first then tack, or youll have a big pain in the arse to deal with like we did.
