Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Y-Pipe", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Installed the system yesterday and it sounds awesome and looks bitchin. While changing out the old I noticed this y-pipe connection bringing both headers together under the truck. This is a horrible piece of engineering. At one point the pipe is cut down to 1" tubing. This has to be one of the biggest restrictions in the entire system.
Has anyone replaced this? Does any company make a replacement piece? If this piece was made better it would really open up the system for ALL our trucks.

JBA does make a Y-Pipe replacement (Part no 2010Y if I recall correctly), but I don't think anyone has managed to do any stand-alone testing with it. Opinions seem to be mixed with it, but I don't know if there's been any substantive testing. I have it on my truck, but I had it installed with the headers and exhaust so I couldn't tell you if it helped or not.

I take it when you purchase the headers it does not come with that piece?
You can either buy it together or separate. I'll save you the hassle of searching by referring you to the "TS store". CLick on the link at the bottom of the page.

No and Yes. The JBA headers do not come with the Y-Pipe. The TRD Headers do. I purchased a JBA Y-Pipe from here: http://www.centuryperformance.com/de...t_id=JBA-2010S
They do not list the Y-Pipe but sell it cheaper than anywhere I have found ($165 + Shipping).
I installed my headers first, then the Y-Pipe about 6 months later. I DID notice a difference, but have not had a dyno.
Also, I agree with your assessment of the stock Y-Pipe: It seems VERY restrictive. I compared the two while off the truck and was amazed at the difference.
Toyota's engineers rarely produce "a horrible piece of engineering." It looks to me like the narrowed-down section acts like a venturi nozzle that pulls a slight vacuum on the other pipe. Maybe not, but few if any aftermarket Y-pipes produce any power gain.

I thought the Y pipe would not fit on the 04 and above years, since they changed the position on the cats and something else? I thought it was on one of the threads in here. Along with the TRD headers, you have to cut and weld alot more since they changed things up. or am I just talking crazy.
EDIT:
Here is a thread that states there are 2 different lengthed y-pipes that JBA makes. Thread
I have the Y pipe from JBA, I doubt it would help much unless you are S/C'd and pushin 9 psi. These small block engines seem to have better low end with some backpressure.

Ive made a custom one before out of 2". I just cut the tubing at the ds flange and bent a section, cut the PS back a bit, and brought them together with a piece of 3" tubing flared out in a merge style. The customer already had a 3" exhaust, and I had just finished installing JBAs on it as well. The boss delivered the truck back to his friend after work and said he was impressed at the power for a gas motor.
