Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "coolant leak", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm looking for some advice here, hope you guys can help.
Last Monday I brought my truck in for service to have the coolant flushed and filled and have my front shocks installed, with an alignment.
All last week I could smell coolant (truck running in the garage or parked running). I originally thought it was just residual burning off, but after 4 days the smell was still strong (overfill tank was getting low as well). I called the dealer and dropped it off Friday morning (along with battery voltage problem, see other thread)
They originally said it was residual from Monday, I disagreed. They did do a pressure test and did find there was a leak in the system, but could not find it. I had to authorize 3 - 4 hours of tear down to research the problem.
A couple questions -
1. If my extended warranty does not cover the repairs, do I then turn on them from the original service?
2. If it's the water pump (suppose to be covered), is it safe to say that I should just get the timming belt done at this point? I have almost 68k now.
I had a leak in a bypass hose that was located under the intake manifold. It took the dealer 2 days to fix it. They had to order some O-rings and gaskets. It was a major job.
Rick

I called them for an update, it is the water pump and is covered by my extended warranty...phew. The good news is that all that labor is covered and it's going to cost me $60 for them to do the timing belt while they're in there, plus $100 deductible
While they are there, if you are close to the 90K Timing belt service, have them do it to. Just a Thought!

Looks like buying that extended warranty paid off!
Now with a new timing belt you should be able to drive to 158k w/o worring about that service.
Now, is it a fluke to see a water pump fail @ 68k? Seems kind of low mileage.
Anyway, glad to hear it worked out!
Frees up some $$ for those JBA's!
