I dont get what kinda airbox is on this 4.0 these days. It got the normal filter in it...then it got that freakin second filter in there that you can not take off. I think its restrictive. Plus the MAF is all molded into that big ugly POS so you cant even just run a nice polished pipe to an open element. I put an open element on the end of that tube that comes out of the box hopeing to just get that nice sucking soundwhen you rev. NOTHING damn box is to restrictive I think and just crap. Has anyone done anything like used a MAF from a different car. I remember the old 3.4 you use to be able to use the Supra MAF on them for a benifit. has anyone experimented with anything yet.

What you are seeing is a HydroCarbon Absorber. Manufacturer is required by government bla bla bla. VERY restrictive.
They are hot staked in. Take a drill with a bit the size of the plastic stakes, and barely drill them out.I did it with 50 miles on my DBL CAb. It is the single biggest upgrade you can make to the air box.
** if you ever have engine problems and have to go to dealer, put the HC back on. It would void any warranty
hmmm..Ok I will try that when I get home..I still would rather have a direct pipe from TB to filter...that big box is crap it just lets air float around in there and doesnt shoot straight in..plus if u look under the box there is a small drain hole so you are losing airflow there also

I'd like to see some pics too. I've got a 4.0 4Runner in which I've swapped the stock stuff out for a K&N kit... It definately has that "sucking" sound now... Where is this other filter located? I don't seem to remember seeing more than one on mine....
You might not have them in the 04...But as soon as you take out the stock filter in the box...there is another filter there with like a mesh screen on it that doesnt come off...Well not supposed to come off Yea i will try and get some pics soon for everyone. I am hopeing for that sucking sound after I get that mesh thing off..Cause i bought my new magnaflow muffler yesterday for my truck also so I want it to sound kinda mean from both ends...LOL

okay.. I know whater you're talkin' about now... It's like a piece of cheese cloth or something behind the stock filter... It was on mine too. All that came out with the K&N kit. With that, you end up with a straight shot from the filter to the MAF Sensor.... Though, the HP gains are close to nothing, it does look and sound cool...
hmmm...weird.. .mine came apart just before it... I don't have my truck here to take a pic right now (in the body shop)...
I just checked K&N's website. Toyota must have changed the intake for 2005. It lists the filterchanger kit available for 2003 and 2004 4.0 4Runners, but not for the 2005... hmmmm...
I will admit, aside from looking/sounding good, the K&N kit didn't do much for the engine... 9 HP @ 5300 RPM isn't exactly "usable"....
Let us know if he emails you with the info. I'd be interested to see what he did. The more that I think about it, the more I wonder... There has to be a way to disconnect the MAF from the stock housing... what if you need to replace it? Hmmm..
And on a side note, Once I installed the K&N kit, I took that big "VVT V6" Cover off my engine... Makes your motor look like a motor instead of a big plastic box...
Before buying the 4.0 K&N kit, I tried installing the one from my old 3.4 Tacoma... It didn't work... It seems to be pretty sensitive to all the stock plumbing. When I hooked up everything on the 3.4 kit to my 4.0, it stuttered and died on me.. I didn't fiddle with it much after that, as I bought the 4.0 kit the same day...
So in answer to your question, I don't think it would simply bolt in... though, I really didn't experiment a whole lot with it when it didn't work....
