Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "My Transmission Croaked!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
This truck has had regular service and has been driven pretty reasonably with very little towing. What towing it has seen hardly even qualifies as towing, such as a utility trailer with a rototiller from the rental yard to home.
I was on my way from Big Bear Lake to San Diego yesterday and was getting back on the freeway in Sun City. I was on the on-ramp, accelerating, when, without warning, the trans slipped BIG and then grabbed (with a shudder). I eased back into it and it did it again. I stopped there (before I was on the freeway) and had it towed to the Toyota dealer in Temecula.
They called me a couple of hours later and said that it needed a new tranny. I asked if it was new or remanufactured and he told me that it was new guts in a remanufactured case. It is supposed to be ready tomorrow...
Has anyone had similar experiences? Is there anything that I should lookout for?
Thanks!
Steve

I had transmission problems with my first car, a 1988 Ford Taurus (should be called Tortoise) and with my first "truck" a 2001 S-10. The Taurus I traded in for my Metro (long story), then to the 2001 S-10. I had a new transmission put in that truck at 9000 miles! I could go on about that thing!
My Tundra startled me when I took it on vacation this past weekend (March 3rd to 6th) when if shifted down hard. It was startling, but then I was going from 3400RPM or so down to 1200RPM climbing uphill with overdrive off. My truck is scheduled Monday for it's regular checkup (25K scheduled maintennance, rotate & spin balance tires, plus other things). I'll mention it to my service rep to see what she thinks.
On a side note, on that same vacation I got some awesome photos of the Grand Canyon, and other sites around northern Arizona. When I get a chance, I'll post some of them.
I had my Toyota mechanic buddy drop the pan on my '01 at 59,000 miles as a precaution. There was no metal particles in the pan and the tranny fluid looked like new! I do tow a 26' travel trailer and have upgraded my factory tranny cooler to a much larger one (pic's in my photos area) and I added an in-line filter to boot. I also mounted up a tranny temp gauge and a thermostatically controlled fan that is mounted to the new cooler. It kicks on when the trans. temp fluid hits about 180 degrees. Works real well when I'm on slow, knarley trails while 4 wheelin or even in stop and go traffic during the summer months. Just a little more protection to keep things from getting too hot.
I want this tranny to last as long as possible! I have not yet switched to a synthetic fluid, but may in the future.

I am supposed to pick it up tomorrow afternoon and I'll find out what went wrong with it then. It would have been done today but UPS didn't deliver the replacement in time...
I hope that it is that easy...

I lost my transmission the same way at about 70K... I am so glad I purchased the 100k protection! No warnings, just slipped then grabbed all of the sudden when I left from a stop. The problem is... I have never been happy with the way the truck shifts, even now with the new one.
Anyone else feel like their transmission is not shifting properly? Mainly when accelerating at lower speeds after coasting? I have 85K on it now and I am worried that 100k may be here before it goes out again
Funny that is almost exactly how mine bit the dust.
I picked it up a week ago today. No complaints, at least not yet. The truck was FILTHY when I took it in and clean (at least on the outside) when I got it back.
I didn't get a chance to ask what failed but the paperwork said that the fluid was burned and had metal particles in it...
Things that make you go "Hmmmm"...
The Corolla that they gave me as a loaner: My biggest complaint was the headlights. I couldn't see squat with 'em on our mountain roads! Visibility with high beams in the Corolla seemed about equal to low beam visibility in the Tundra.

ive haven't had any real issues on the trans just at times it take's a wile to find the gear wile going up a hill .My dealership sayes its normal ..I also havent changed the fluid yet either still on the original fluid with 115k..I did make an appointment to get this flushed out and the guy doing the work has a tundra himself and told me I am pasted due but the shifting seem's fine .I don't tow with my tundra either and it has the v8 trans cooler he advised me after he pump's the tourk convertor out and replaces the fluid to advise changing it at 15k from now on.I am not sure why i waited so long on this I know I get my oil changed 3 k since new but somehow overlooked the trans service..

I just bought a 18' Toy hauler and when bringing up my really steep hill it vibrated like crazy. I was in low at full throttle to get up and she shuttered like mad. Once I got to to top it stopped. Noticed last night the coolant was red and the engine oil was about a quart and a half low. I'm running Amsoil in the engine and I think it was red in color when I put it in.
This is the first time I've towed anything besides a 1500 lb trailer. Was not pleased at all how she towed. The trailer weighs about 3600 dry and it felt like the trailer was towing me. I've got 52000 miles and had regular transmission services at the dealer. Going to take it in Monday and see whats up.
Anybody know what might be going on?
Thanks
Don

I prefer a synthetic transmission fluid in the 2000-2002 trucks. I like Mobil 1, Schaeffer, Amsoil, Royal Purple.
These trucks use a Dexron-III ATF, so synthetic is easy to find. PAO based synthetic like the ones above have higher film strength than petroleum oils, don't get as hot, and don't deteriorate as quickly when they do get hot.
15,000 miles is a good schedule for a pan drain and refill with conventional ATF. I'd go to 30k if the tranmission has full synthetic, or 60,000 for a complete flush and refill.
I like Magnefine or SPX Filtran in-line transmission filters. The one's I've opened have all had some steel particles on the magnet and other particles in the pleated media. These particles have to be abrasive in the transmission parts.
TUNDRAV8GEORGIA,
Yes, you're way overdue. I'd clean the transmission with Auto-Rx for 1000 miles before a complete flush and fluid renewal. Don't expect your transmission guy to know about this...it is an industrial product that has recently been packaged for cars & trucks.

Thank's Ken,
I saved that link a wile back and allready placed my order a wile back however I didnt use it yet. I had another question you mentioned an inline filter for the trans line and if i recall tundrabrad has that setup on his truck and may I ask this question when the inline filter is dirty when do you know to replace it doesnt this do more harm then good if it's clogged and why doesnt toyota have a filter on the trans besides the one on the pan that is mesh?
