Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Exhaust tip diameter", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hey everyone!
I'll be putting a Spintech on my truck very soon, and will be keeping all the original piping, because my priorities with this mod are more performance-based.
I also want to put on a chrome tip for looks. My question is...
since small diameter piping seems to be key in maintaining torque, must I get an equally small-diametered tip? Can I go larger? Anyone have any suggestions?
You can go much larger on the tip. Just as long as the piping is the right size. I'm about to get 3.5" tips to replace my 3" tips. But my pipe is 2.5".
Just out of curiousity, what kind are you gonna get? Tipped, or flat?

Since keeping your low end torque is your priority, a muffler swap will serve you well.
Instead of a chromed tip, id reccomend a stainless tip. A chrome tip will rust and flake before too long.
You can get the tip any size you want, it wont make a difference in performance, only fit and finish. Id say a 3.5" tip would look the cleanest.
One thing though, since your keeping your stock piping, it will look retarded with the way the tail pipe comes down at an angle. Id at least get the rearmost bend in the tail pipe remade so the tip will be level.

Stainless steel, that sounds like a great idea, thx dezert.
If "tipped" and "flat" mean what I think they do (yes I'm a newb )
I'm probably going tipped (cut at an angle?), but who knows I may change
my mind as I continue learning about this... took me forever just to research
and buy the muffler
Thx again for the info guys,

Are you saying that because you just don't like that look, or is it generally
considered bad-looking. I've seen pleny of trucks with pipes that come down
on the sides. Aren't the TRDs even like that? Anyway, I ask because I was
thinking of keeping that angle, I thought it would nicely hide the point where
the nice exhaust tip, meets the ugly stock piping. What do you think?
Hes just saying move the tip up a bit...when you stick a huge tip on there the angle just looks funny. Its really easy, when they cut your stock muffler out just push it up on the same axis and move it closer to the quarter panel. Looks 10X better . Ill get some pics up later today...
If I had to do a tip again I would prob spring for a 4". The 3.5" looks pretty damn good, but 4" woudl be like damn. It was welded on...pics fer sure tomorrow, sorry I have been laggin with finals. Its a slashed and rolled tip at 45 degrees if that makes any sense...
