Default Phillips 66 Synthetic Blend

For all you "Dino" users!

Apparently Phillips 66 has developed a new synthetic blend that has gotten good reviews on the motor oil site. It is supposed to have a 50% - 50/50 mix of synthetic and dino to make it a group three oil. Higher than the 33% that Valvoline DuraBlend has. It also sales for around 1.12 at Wal Mart. Could it be a "Blend" at a "Dino" price? Might be worth checking out. I did see the property numbers of the oil and they look pretty good. By the way, the oil is called "TropArtic Synthetic Blend Motor Oil." If you want to see the specs go to the link below.

Using the 5w-30 as a data point, it has a flash point of 455F, cold crank of -30F, HTHS of 3.0, TBN of 7.8, and it is certified under Fords spec 929 which means it is one tough oil. Per MSDS, it is 72-83% synthetic oil. It also states that it is of the Severly Hydro-cracked type of basestock and that makes it about 75% Group III. The remainder is not mentioned but most likely would be a solvent refined Group I. Pretty decent oil for the money.

Slick,

Thanks for the info. I think I may give this oil a try at the next change. From what I read and what you have shared, it seems like a great oil to use and the price is great for a synthetic blend. I had good expectations with 50% of its makeup being synthetic but the numbers you found were much higher.

TNX for the info.

I don't see the MSDS for TropArtic Synthetic Blend Motor Oil 5W-30 but 10W-30.

Where can I find info on Valvoline DuraBlend synthetic content?

Here is a link for the MSDS for TropArtic. Check it out. % looks high for synthetic base.

86-89%. That's quite high.

But the link is for 10W-30 not 5W-30.

Yes, I did notice that, but all the links on the website, for the MSDS, show for 10w-30 only. I don't know if there would be a big difference with the percentage of synthetic base for 5w-30. Maybe someone else could answer that question. Perhaps someone at Phillips 66 website. They do have a "contact" link.

I'm not sure why. This is where it was mentioned that it was sold. I live about 45 minutes from the nearest Wal Mart so I haven't gotten a chance to stop and look since I found out about this oil. The motor oil site is where I first heard of it and where it was sold. A person named Razorback stated it. Scroll a few messages down and you will see it.

Just thought of something. Did you look for TropArtic Synthetic Blend? Maybe it is listed with this name where you can see it (large print) and Phillips 66 may be too small of print to catch at a glance.

I looked at both.

There's not even Connoco or Phillips mineral oil or ATF.

Funny, ConnocoPhillips headquarter is here in Houston.

The 2003 MSDS is meaningless because that oil isn't made any more. The June 10, 2004 MSDS doesn't show what base oils are in the product.

ConocoPhillips makes Conoco, Phillips, 76, and Kendall brand products. They are the importer of Group III base oil from Ultra-S, a Korean refiner. Group III base oil is very good, is very highly refined petroleum, and has the legal right to be called full synthetic in the U.S. only. Group III base oil sells for slightly more than conventional oil. Motor oil is about 80% base oil and about 20% additive package. http://www.imakenews.com/lng/e_artic...yJnnN,b19p9DCt

ConocoPhillips is pulling a smart marketing move offering their API-SM and ILSAC GF-4 motor oils as a syn blend at a regular oil price. The oil is good, not great, and likely well worth the price.

Ken:

Let me see if I understand what you are saying.

This oil is 80% hydrocracked synthetic (like Castrol)?

Ken,

Thanks for pointing out the date. I didn't see the issue date of 2003 on the last page. Here is the latest Data Sheet for TropArtic Syn Blend 5w-30. It's dated 7/04. Let me know what you think about the specs.

http://www.phillips66lubricants.com/...SynBlendMO.pdf

By the way, I noticed the zinc % is not listed. I emailed Phillips and the sent back that it was 860 ppm. I don't know how much that translates to a % but at least there is the figure.
