Default Excessive gas smell at startup

Anyone else have this? When I got out in the morning to start up my 05 Taco (4cyl), it starts and runs just fine, but man does the exhaust stink. You can smell the gas. It's not from up front. I've noticed it twice at startup walking around and being right next to the exhuast. Just thought this was odd. Should I take it in? Or is this normal. Like I said it's running fine, MPG is normal. It's just the smell at startup in the morning.

Yeah, I've had that happen a couple of times as well with mine. Same with me as far as normal gas milage and power, just a strong gasoline smell at startup. I don't notice it everytime, just randomly.

I could be wrong in my assumption. But would this mean they're running rich, and theres unspent gasoline.

Just a guess.

When my truck was new, it had a wierd smell for almost 1000 miles.. I thought it was the exhaust system or catalytic convertor burning in.. The smell went away & 83K miles later I'm still getting 25 mpg.

Yes, I got that god-awful smell when starting, too. (Especially if I started before the garage door opened.)

It doesn't seem to be as strong, now (2,700 miles).

I continue to have this excessive smell. I brought it into the dealership, left it over night, and they, unsurprisingly, said nothing was out of order. This issue coupled with ongoing rough shifting (I have a 5 speed 2.7L with only about 7500 miles) which they also refuse to address have left me feeling powerless to get these issues addressed. I have 4 small kids so I have to be careful that they are not around the truck when I start it.

Since the dealership refuses to do anything I just phoned NHTSA's safety defects division to report this problem (1-888-327-4236). I would encourage you to do the same.
