Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "intakes", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
What do you mean by it is the best out there? Did you have your truck dynoed or are you just saying it feels faster? Notice an increase/decrease in torque or hp? Any different sound? I really want to find out from someone who has the volant if it is worth it and better than the k&n.

A lot of people on this board have cut a some sort of holes in the base of their air boxes. Try doing a search there was a lot of talk about them on here. If you don't find anything then let me know.
I am personally looking for a good intake system as well. I know of two RAM air systems. One is made by Ice Man which directs the intake tube under the truck. The other is Volant which works the same way but maybe pricey. Volant looks pretty awesome but the only thing I don't like about it is that they use their own type of filter. Whereas the Ice man uses K&N Filters. I know alot about these because before I got my Tundra I had a little Jap Rice Rocket.

I have a picture of my deck plate airbox mod in "my photos".
It is basically a 4" hole cut into the lower, front right of the air box. After cutting the hole I installed a 4" deckplate. It makes it so that I can close the hole when I want to (dirty conditions, rain, etc...). Here is a pic of the deckplate:

How about putting together a "How-To" for the "Garage"?

I "de-tubed" my airbox last night, and I have a new K&N drop-in filter. The filter alone seemed to make some difference. After the tube was removed last night, I think I noticed a little better throttle response and maybe slightly quicker.
It could also be that it sounds SO much better! Just de-tubing makes the intake really 'throaty' sounding. It's definately a very noticable change in the way it sounds, more 'powerful' sounding. Whether or not any actual power gains came out of it, I'm not sure, and I don't have access to a dyno to test it!
Every car, truck and motorcycle I have owned has had restricted airflow at the air box. I’m not sure why they build them that way but they do run better and get better fuel mileage when they are relieved.
I hope my Tundra is the same way.
I did my own version of an air box mod.
First I drilled out the rivet and de-tubed it.
Then I used a 7/8” hole saw and cut out 14 holes between the ribs of the lower half of the air box.
Used the rat tail end (handle end), of a file to remove the plastic burs around the holes.
Cleaned it up and re-installed it.
You can’t close it off like the Deck Plate mod but you could duck tape the holes if you had to. Not much worry for that where I live.
Also! Big drill bits tend to rip the plastic. A hole saw works much better.

So now your engine sucks in HOT engine compartment air, which is not good for power.
I bet the power gain many people feel is just because they go from a dirty stock filter to a clean K&N or other aftermarket filter. I feel a power gain every time I change my filter too but I always get a stock Toyota filter.

Well V8Toilet it’s a trade off.
You do get more of the hot air that surrounds the motor and from the radiator while idling in traffic. Once the revs pick up, the fan turns faster and the on coming fresh air starts slamming into the front of your truck I’ll bet that there is a lot less “Hot Air” hanging around in there to be sucked into your motor.
I’m not looking for power this time but for a little better gas mileage. This trick has worked on my other vehicles and I think this time will be no different.
